«On April 9th ​​something happened that, in our opinion, has enormous significance: we signed the first union agreement in the history of Amazon». I’m the one making the announcement Filt-Cgil Roma and Lazio, Fit-Cisl Lazio and Uil Trasporti Lazio, who – after years of trade union struggles, strikes and pickets – have reached an agreement with the American e-commerce giant for the warehouse in Passo Corese (Rieti). The plant employs around 2 thousand permanent employees, plus another 2 thousand seasonal external collaborators during the busiest periods of the year, such as Christmas.

The agreement between Amazon and unions united

The document signed in recent days is not a simple meeting report, but a real union agreement, which binds the company and the social partners. «This is a first, important step towards a desirable future, in which industrial relations become the central focus and real added value for the entrepreneurial initiative», comment CGIL, CISL and UIL in a joint note. But what exactly does the agreement provide? First of all, it intervenes on one of the issues most criticized by the unions, because it introduces the «ban on remote monitoring of work activities».

Permits for unexpected events

More generally, the agreement between Amazon and the unions provides for a series of innovations on the organization of work and the balance between life and work. Through the ratification of practices tested on the site in the last two years, explain the workers’ representatives, «the agreement establishes and formalizes the workers’ right to access parental supportallowing workers with children up to 14 years old, and a positive holiday balance, more flexibility in managing absences due to their illness”. Employees will also be entitled to one use regulated «Urgent Time Off»a request for absence which may be submitted without notice, due to unforeseen circumstances.

The “family shift” and the Switch and Swap programs

Among other measures, i Switch and Swap programs: the first allows workers to self-organise, exchanging weekly shifts, the second to change the day of rest. Among the hourly flexibility solutions for work-life balance, there is also the so-called “family shift”, designed to facilitate workers and in particular those with children up to eight years of age. “We feel that we have laid a first, fundamental stone for priority trade union practice, that of bargaining, dialogue and concertation, thus opening a path that can only bring benefits for everyone”, claim the unions in a joint note.

    Mi auguro che anche le altre aziende della logistica siano costrette a seguire, invece di ammazzare i sindacalisti con i camion davanti ai picchetti come successo due volte negli anni scorsi.
