On this day 33 years ago, in the village of Ahmići near Vitez, one of the most terrible crimes against civilians in the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina took place. At dawn, on April 16, 1993, HVO members massacred the Bosniak population.

They killed 116 civilians, among them 11 children and 32 women. Entire families were wiped out. The mosque was razed to the ground and the houses set on fire – not only killing the bodies, but also the traces of life.

An 87-year-old woman was set on fire in her house. The newborn was suffocated by smoke. The brother did not manage to save his sister because he was arrested at the door. And the neighbor, the one who laughed with them yesterday, was holding a lighter that day.

There is no excuse. Not even then. Not even now.

But crime cannot kill the truth. And injustice will not last forever. Ahmići lives on – in the memory of every virtuous person, in the tears of mothers, in the prayers of Sabah, and in our fight so that the truth is not forgotten and not repeated.

Don’t forget and don’t forgive! Never!

"That morning, even the sky cried for you. A child’s cry and an old woman’s voice rang out. Don’t worry, your sacrifice is not in vain as the universe is great. She gave birth in us to heroes of fearless courage and a heart like steel."
