In the name of cheap sensationalism, hypotheses unsupported by evidence are being created. This is clearly visible in the publication of Professor Figlerowicz’s research, in which he analyzed the haplogroups of several Piasts buried in tombs (only some of whom are actually confirmed). Already in the oldest generations examined (which, moreover, are not even close to Mieszko I), we find different haplogroups, which suggests that, from very early on, someone else was busy getting Piast wives pregnant. And yet, despite this, a ton of articles are being published claiming that THE PIASTS WERE NOT SLAVIC.

It’s all the more depressing that these hypotheses are spreading nonsense not only through clickbait pseudo-historical websites, but also through respected scholars, with Figlerowicz himself at the forefront.

  1. A kind reminder that slavs are entholinguistic group. Which means that being slavic is defined by shared culture, language, or genes, and any mix of these factors. Ultimately making this group organically diverse. Or to put it in another words: haplogroups mean jack shit on their own. While turboslavs and antislavs both can go f themselves.

Honestly, this feels like pretty tabloid-level reporting. The study itself is actually quite limited. It’s based on remains of people who lived 200+ years after the first Piasts and mostly focuses on just one Mazovian branch of the dynasty. On top of that, there are several methodological issues, so making big, sweeping claims here is a stretch. This is nowhere near as groundbreaking as the author makes it sounds.

  3. Is this really a surprise that a medieval royal dynasty, which, by default, engaged in *political marriages*, has inconclusive DNA!?

That article is so stupid in so many aspects i can;t be bothered to debunk it all, so just remember that there is no such thing as slavic DNA (sure R1a haplogroup is most popular in slavic nations but also in parts of Scandinavia, central Asia & northern India) it’s muuuch more complicated than that, and even if such a thing as “slavic DNA” existed, there’s no guarantee that none of WÅ‚adysÅ‚aw Herman’s (the eldest Piast buried in the PÅ‚ock cathedral) male ancestors (Kazimierz Odnowiciel, Mieszko II, BolesÅ‚aw Chrobry, Mieszko I) was cuckolded by someone with different Y haplogroup.

  5. As a side note, I’m pretty sure the idea that Mieszko I was a viking (sort of Rurik) was started by nazis
