CHP Chairman and Socialist International Deputy Chairman Özgür Özel answered ANKA News Agency’s questions about the meeting and agenda in Barcelona before the two-day meeting of the Global Progressive Mobilization jointly organized by the Socialist International, the European Socialist Party (PES) and the Progressive Alliance (PA).
Özel noted the following about the meeting attended by more than 4 thousand progressive leaders, activists, academics, trade unionists and political party representatives from different countries of the world:
“This meeting has actually been planned for a year and a half, the first idea of which belonged to Dear Pedro Sanchez and me. As you know, our Socialist International and the Germans had left the Socialist International in the past, and some countries; the Progressive Alliance, where they are active, and PES, the umbrella organization of all social democratic, left-wing parties in the European Union, will come together at the same event. But this is not just a meeting. This is a beginning. Today we are declaring mobilization. The Global Progressive Alliance We are declaring our mobilization. We are making a call from here that brings together and mobilizes all the left, social democrat and democratic structures in the world. Tomorrow, all the leaders of the left from six continents will come out and this is not far from us. Our rallies in Türkiye were creating excitement in our political relatives all over the world. We are taking a step from this hall, calling for solidarity and all progressive forces in the world to mobilize and stand up. Just as CHP invites all democrats of Türkiye to stand up under the name of Turkey Alliance, we also share an idea we have with Pedro Sanchez and call on left and social democratic structures all over the world to stand up together, to stand up and defend democracy, institutions, rules and freedoms against those who erode democracy, institutions and rules.”
Özel said the following regarding the government’s criticism that ‘The opposition is doing politics through pain’ regarding the school attacks in Şanlıurfa and Kahramanmaraş, in which 10 people lost their lives:
“Turkey has become a country of mourning. It has become the ‘country of strange deaths’ as young children lost their lives in work accidents. We were experiencing all kinds of pain in Türkiye, and something that has never been experienced in Türkiye before, such as a school shooting, something that we watched in America and gave us chills from afar, started to happen in Türkiye as well. Unfortunately, we were once again right as the party that talked the most about school safety, made the most constructive suggestions and expressed a concern the most. Unfortunately, this is a big deal.” We are saddened because the weakness in school security has led to such consequences. Someone should take responsibility for this issue, look into the eyes of this nation and apologize, saying, ‘We did not hear, we did not listen. CHP even described the human resources. There is no opportunity for seven-year specialist sergeants to continue working in municipalities other than police. We should take this suggestion into consideration. Instead of saying ‘we didn’t listen, we didn’t listen, we made a mistake’, they describe how we will oppose.
Opposition is the place where the government defines how it should be and is a legitimate ground. The government has no right to describe how to oppose the opposition. What the government needs to do now is self-criticism. We have been careful to use extremely responsible language from the first moment, and we continue to do so. No one should care about what we say or do to cover up their own flaws. We know very well how to oppose and how to solve these problems when we come to power. Essentially, they should take responsibility for themselves and apologize to this nation."
Özel spoke as follows about the ongoing debate regarding the resignation calls for the Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin and the cancellation of the April 23 National Sovereignty and Children’s Day events:
“Yusuf Tekin has no right to occupy the seat of the Ministry of National Education for one more day. This was already necessary with what he did in the past, and especially after what happened, he should not continue to serve as the ministry for another day. April 23 is a very important holiday. It is both the anniversary of national sovereignty, the anniversary of the establishment of the Parliament, and a holiday that our founder gave to children. There is no doubt that April 23 should be celebrated. However, of course, under these conditions, April 23 should not be celebrated with great enthusiasm, music and fun, but rather in an atmosphere of mourning.” It should be celebrated appropriately, but never, without canceling any ceremonies, but of course not with concerts or entertainment, but as the day requires. We do not find it right that someone should advocate that April 23 should not be celebrated because of these events taking place in schools. However, I find the statements and call made by Mr. Davutoğlu to be celebrated in accordance with today’s conditions."
Özel said the following regarding US Ambassador to Ankara Tom Barrack’s statement at the Antalya Diplomatic Forum: “The only thing that worked in the Middle East was strong leadership regimes: Either compassionate monarchies or constitutional monarchy-type structures. The countries that wore the cloak of democracy, which we attacked in the name of human rights, failed.”
“I will say this in the shortest possible way: In Antalya, which Atatürk called ‘the most beautiful city in the world’, after a monarchy, in the country founded by Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who rejected the monarchy and brought democracy to Türkiye after the War of Independence, it is a complete injustice to come and criticize democracy and praise the monarchy. From this time on, Tom Barrack is persona non grata, persona non grata, in terms of Turkish democracy. And from now on, we declare Tom Barrack as an unwanted person in the Republic of Turkey. I see that he cannot represent the USA here for another minute, nor can he come to Antalya and say, “There is no democracy in this region. We need strong leadership. We should not even sacrifice democracy for strong leadership.” “He shouldn’t be doing this duty for another minute.”

Toplantıda, T24’ten gazeteci Şirin Payzın’a konuşan Özgür Özel şu ifadeleri kullandı:
*“Sosyalist Enternasyonal’de başkan yardımcısı pozisyonundayım ve yaklaşık bir buçuk sene önce Pedro Sanchez’le beraber bugünü hayal etmiş ve bunu savunmuştuk. Çünkü dünyadaki bütün otoriterler birbirleriyle dayanışıyorlar, hep birlikte demokrasiyi geriye götürüyorlar. Ve bu otoriterleşmeye karşı harekete geçmek lazım. Farklı farklı yapılar var. Örneğin, Sosyalist Enternasyonal’de Alman sosyal demokratlar yok. Biz, İlerici İttifak’ta hem Sosyalist Enternasyonal’i hem de Avrupa Birliği’ne üye ülkelerdeki çatı örgütü olan PES’i bir araya getireceğimiz büyük bir toplantı hayal ettik. Bugün o hayal gerçekleşiyor. Herkes çok mutlu, çok umutlu. Çünkü dünyanın bütün demokratlarının, dünyanın bütün otokratlarına karşı harekete geçmesi gerekiyor.”*
# Sol liderlerin dünyaya sesleneceği bir miting
Payzın’ın, Pedro Sanchez ile görüşüp görüşmeyeceğini sorması üzerine Özel şu yanıtı verdi:
*“Bu toplantı zaten birlikte tasarlayıp harekete geçtiğimiz bir toplantı. Hem Pedro Sanchez’le hem diğer yoldaşlarla sık sık bir araya geleceğiz. Özellikle yarın, bugüne kadar yapılmamış bir şey olacak. Dünyadaki bütün sol liderler üçer dakika süreyle buradan, büyük bir mitingde dünyaya seslenecekler, kısa ve net mesajlar verecekler, moral verecekler. Yarınki miting çok büyük bir başlangıç, çok iddialı bir ilk adımdır.”*
Herkesle bir araya geleceğini belirten Özgür Özel’in, toplantıya katılan eski Yunanistan Başbakanı Yorgo Papandreu ile kucaklaştığı anlar da kameralara yansıdı.
