oh no, not better waste disposal!

the guardian saying “instead of adding a fourth bin, they should do a container deposit scheme“

not realising victoria famously has famously had a container deposit scheme for almost 3 years now

    “oh, but it‘d cost councils!”

not realising the government has gave councils 127 million dollars extra to pay for the bins

so much for a news organisation that cares for the environment, hey.

Make residents do more of the work while charging them more at the same time, brilliant.

  3. My back yard is 2×2 meters~. While I applaud the initiative I just don’t have the room to fit them on my property

I much preferred it back in the day when we had one big yellow bin with a central divider for glass and cardboard either side

  5. The stupid quote by the government:

“The container deposit scheme [CDS] has been embraced by Victorians and complements the rollout of Victoria’s four-stream waste and recycling system. Many items, such as glass bottles and jars, are not suitable for CDS Vic – the glass bin allows households to conveniently recycle these at home.”

fails to actually provide an explanation on why Victoria can’t like other states that accept more glass as part of the container deposit scheme.

As is typical with this government, they fail to listen to the people/groups on the ground who are telling them purple bins are barely being filled and often there’s not enough space on the nature strip.

Clearly a more sensible option is to improve the exisiting CDS rather than introduce a bin that many people and Councils are saying they don’t need or want.

  6. I have a glass bin and it’s been two years now and it’s not even half full. It just sits there.

Running another fleet of trucks to pick all these bins is surely not worth while. Both cost or environmental impact wise.
Why not throw a glass recycling bin at each container deposit station where people can drop them off?

Where is all this glass coming from to justify not sorting anymore? I know I don’t wear the Dolmio grin that often…

omfg, I already hardly fills the 2 bins I do have, i WISH I could get a smaller yellow bin. I dont even bother putting the bins out unless there is remotly enough that its worth it, which isnt often. We have a single large green bin shared by 10 units and yeah it fills up, but not always.

At this point I would rather one big bin that is made up of multiple smaller bins

  9. I’ve had the four different bins for 5 years now, and it really doesn’t bother me much. That said, we only put out the glass bin maybe twice a year. Although I do see some other neighbours put it out on each pick up date. It almost highlights the alcohol lovers in the neighbourhood.

  10. Honestly just stupid. Lived in one area that had it and in the two years, probably only filled it half away.
Now in an area without and with the CDS. It’s gonna less! Gonna be a while to fill a bin with my little pesto jars.

  11. I would really like to have a chat with the people who say “the practical challenges of space are real but manageable”. Perhaps an onsite inspection is in order so they can point out where they can magic in some additional space to manage the practical problem of no space? They might finally learn that the laws of physics are real…

  12. I wouldn’t even know when the glass pick-up happens in Ballarat. I think it’s only once a month. But what day I wouldn’t know. I’ve never seen a neighbor put a glass bin out.

I can the need, but the added cost for residents who would barely use it (myself included) isn’t appropriate right now. May be they should offer a smaller bin at as a cheaper option.

  14. Do most people really go through enough glass for this to make sense? Maybe a yearly glass collection lol.

I have nowhere to put a fourth bin! A third one was difficult but I made it work.

Are they going to change the fees for collection. Because if I’m only going to put the purple bin out once or twice a year I’m not paying full price. As it is we only put our green waste out every 4 to 6 months.
