Fun fact about A4 paper is if you fold it in half it keeps the same aspect ratio (1:sqrt(2)). Any fun facts about letter paper?

Philippines LOL. Stick like a sore thumb in Asia.

To be fair, we have A4 papers and some offices uses it. But Letter is more common. Also, Legal Size is what US called long paper.

It’s actually mostly because many office buildings (and thus office equipment) were destroyed in Europe/ other parts of the world during World War II. The USA was largely fine, and didnt need new equipment, so didn’t adopt the new A4 standard that had been developed during the 1920s. Previous to the war, most places used 8.5×11

  4. American paper sizes piss me off big time. All there software especially Adobe defaults to the shit they use over there.

US and some random countries: One Standard

The entire rest of the world: Another Standard

    Every f-ing time

Oh wow, as a European immigrant living in America I just now realized why Americans look at me funny when I say “I would like to buy A4 paper”

  7. I used to work at IBM back in Brazil and they only used letter papers in the office… They used to import paper and office stuff from India wtf

  8. Super interesting, why the heck is the Norwegian/Scottish/Irish coast on North American paper?

How I felt when the printer told me PC LOAD LETTER

People in Eu: why it doesn’t print properly, oh it’s “letter”.
next time: damn thing resets to letter size every other time.

  11. A4 is actually more common in the Philippines compared to the latter. It’s just us letter paper size is still being used but rarely nowadays.

  12. This is so annoying. I live in the US (currently, I’m not from here originally) and brought several reams of A4 with me when I moved here, since I still do a lot that requires it, and all the paperwork etc. I have to submit to my home consulate still has to be on A4. You can’t find A4 locally at all. If you want some you have to order it off Amazon or other online retailer at some ridiculous price.

Plus sorry but A4 just looks so much nicer, proportionally. American paper looks weirdly fat and short.

This is false, in Chile we use oficio chileno 8,5 x 13, the USA use 8,5 x 14, completely different!

  14. I wish we had A4 in Canada…
Enough with that Imperial crap that’s never thought out in context.

The world: Wow nice standard, Germany, can we have this?

USA: We just take 17 feathers of a bald eagle, make a rectangle out of it and call it a paper measuring system.

  16. Paper “Divide”

It’s the US being incessantly different for the sake of it, while the rest of the world agrees to standardize.

I was thinking about the letter vs. A4 thing a couple days ago. Was thinking that we Canadians should take this opportunity of, shall we say this period or American decoupling, and make the switch in the near future.
