A Trump supporter who attended the rally was interviewed and he said that he had been to a rally for Donald Trump four years earlier that was held in the same general area and at that time, when he entered the seating area, he could see at least 3 to 4 agents on every rooftop. This time, there were none and he couldn’t understand why they weren’t there.

I’ve wondered why the Secret Service team let the shooter climb onto a nearby roof with a long gun and stay long enough to fire shots? I assume a sniper took out the shooter immediately after shots were fired. That would be the only explanation why the agents who surrounded Trump let him stand up – because they thought the threat was neutralized. How did they know there was only one shooter?

my take – it was a real assassination attempt and trump simply capitalized on the fact that he was lucky enough to survive it.
consider the context – trump is down in the polls and likely to go to prison if he isn’t reelected. a shot is fired and trump is tackled to the ground. adrenaline rushes through his veins as he processes the fact that he is still alive. in this moment he sees opportunity – knowing that the shooter has been eliminated, he does a fist bump as he is escorted to a bulletproof van. he proceeds to wear a diaper on his ear as he sits atop the news cycle for weeks to come.
if this were a staged attempt, i do not think trump (or any other person for that matter) would risk having a bullet fired so closely to their face that the smallest error could result in death.
