He’s right. The US is using economic integration as leverage. This is something Canadian leaders should have foreseen decades ago and made contingencies.

It will hurt, but minimizing that reliance is how Canada survives.

Hes been showing us this since day one , like it or not Carney has been on point and far further along in recognizing the situation as it developed.

  3. From a risk management perspective having 80% of your exports going to one country has always been a weakness. Diversify!

Completely true. USA is a failing country. We need to connect to other countries, which is what we are doing.

This is not going to go over well with maga though. Should be interesting.

Carney promised us he was the guy, the only guy, who could deal with Trump and now that he can’t get anywhere he’s pretending we’re better off without the US. How very pragmatic.

Sharing the world’s largest land border with the world’s largest economy superpower is a net benefit. We can’t and shouldn’t completely unwind ourselves from the United States. We absolutely should diversify though.

USA is in decline and will be for decades to come. Unless Canada is willing to follow the same path, better to look somewhere else. Canada has a lot to offer to the world if we find our own way.

The 30 trillion economy that we share a border with is obviously a weak link. Elbows up everyone and make sure you remember that Carney is super well educated and knows how the world works. Dont ask questions, just trust him, because he is smarter than you anyways and will make the right decisions for Canada. Vote liberal!!

  9. Canada has deals with the United States.

    These states are not United.

Figure out the evangelical inbreeding pedophile stuff, and maybe Canada will talk to you in the future…through a 3rd party… Maybe 😉

  10. Incoming speech from Pollievre saying the opposite to be true later this afternoon…

  11. Funny coming from Mark that has 91% investments in the USA, his wife lives in the USA and kids live and go to the school in the USA. Canadians have to be elbows up though right?

  12. So narrow minded , I hope he’s lying and just trying to mislead the public. Watch his investments , watch Brookfield

I’m quite happy that Carney is our Prime Minister, the alternative is frightening.

  14. Eventually trump will be gone, but the entire Republican Party is doing nothing to reign him in, so it’s obviously what they want as their end game. This means half their government is going to behave like this when they’re in power, so the us can’t be trusted anymore

This is to get Canadians ready for the inevitable dissolution of CUSMA. America won’t bargain in good faith so it’s swirling the drain.

Canada has refused to join Pax Silica and the critical minerals pact – because both are aimed at countering China. We are building a deep water port for a Chinese owned mine up north.

I feel like Carney underplays the extent to which he is going all-in on China, and prefers to frame everything as anti-American even when these pacts are signed by Australia, Taiwan, England, EU, Japan, Mexico, etc.

“There’s much forward guidance to be found in our shared history. We will get through this because of who we have always been,” he said. “It’s our country. It’s our future. We are taking back control, to build Canada strong.”

  18. Technically it is. Even with a few “wins” over the past year, the bulk of our trade is still with the US. It gives them leverage to mess around with us.

The challenge is you can’t stop that cold turkey, it’d be rough for the Canadian economy. Trying to slow detach over a period of years/decades will take some real finesse.

It also doesn’t help that the US can unilaterally tariff things that should be part of CUSMA, so it’s a bit, of what are you really agreeing too. It feels a bit that the US wants access to our natural resources, but wants to limit buying manufactured goods (of which I believe we already buy more US manufactured goods, than the US buys from Canada, and they have nearly 10x our population).

Of course it is. Canada has always been massively dependent on the U.S.’s goodwill, and now that it’s very clear that goodwill is not reliable, other plans and painful choices have to be made.

  20. We need to untangle our militaries – there are Canadian forces today under US command, e.g. Operation Caribbe and NORAD.

We may still need to cooperate on North American airspace, but it can’t remain the same structure, and we can’t be under American command.

  21. And the verdict is? For example, I’m not hearing anything about new refinery construction. Does the gentleman have trouble connecting the dots? Has this gentleman already withdrawn all his investments from the American market?
Today, the initiative to sever ties is coming from the Americans, and my friends’ small businesses have already lost 40 to 60 percent of their profitability due to Americans ignoring purchases from Canada.
    Good job, thank you!

  22. >The new reality

Excellent. I’ve been looking forward to this and preparing. But no one around me has done the same. Seeing that I am ready. I can’t wait for the hard times.

We have Brian Mulroney and the cons for this. Thanks for giving away our financial independence. It has been dribbled away in the last 25 yrs

  24. Even before Brian Mulroney signed the first NAFTA, Canada was already exporting 60-70% of it’s trade to USA.

It’s a big challenge to get that number down, when you have that massive economy next door a short drive away, and everyone else requires an ocean voyage.

  25. friendly-techie on

Great – now blame the U.S. for what’s to come with the record deficits. Canadians will fall for it again and again. Of couse the terrible governance by the LIberals over the last decade has nothing to do with where we are. They have their boogeyman for the next election.
