John Locke on the right of a people to revolution:

Whenever the legislators endeavor to take away, and destroy the property of the people, or to reduce them to slavery under arbitrary power, they put themselves into a state of war with the people, who are thereupon absolved from any farther obedience…
By this breach of trust they (the legislators) forfeit the power, the people had put into their handsfor quite contrary ends, and it devolves to the peoplewho have a right to resume their original liberty.

Of course, Locke here simply states and summarizes what has been, nothing less and nothing more, a natural law since the early days of civilization:

Sometime in 2378 BC, in distant Mesapotamina, Urukagina threw Lugaland from power for its endemic corruption and proclaimed what are known as the first reforms in history, reforms where the foundations of the legal rights of the average citizen were laid.
