Thursdays was Goo (alternative), Fridays was Joy (dance) and Saturday was Pop (mainstream).

Went to some good raves there back in the day. I remember looking out of those windows at the top and watching office workers heading to work at 7am or something.

I saw the Cosmic Psychos there!

I’ve been to some gigs there, but not the underage nights in the early 90s. I was over 18 before I knew they existed..

$1 spirits, those were the days 😍

This was the best venue for live music in Melbourne bar none. Absolute disgrace that it was sold off and gutted rather than being heritage listed and maintained.

Loved the Metro/Palace. Craziest concert I saw there was Millencolin back in the early ‘00’s. Place was jammed packed and could hardly move on all three levels. NIN and The Gaslight Anthem were great shows as well.

Saw James brown there in about 1997?!! He was on stage for about 3 minutes then his band would go off magnificently for 20 min then he’d come on for 3 and be amazing etc etc

I had the absolute privilege of headlining a gig there with my band sometime in the early 2010’s. What a stage. And the memorabilia backstage was humbling – posters from so many great acts. The Butterfly Effect concert filmed there is one of the greats.

Is it where the Le Meredian is now, or is that somewhere else?

A more detailed history. Melbourne lost a lot when they let that shitcunt get away with this.
Ahh the good old days of Metro. Entering the grand entrance and lining up for the cloak room then opening up to the bar and DJ booth in the middle and onwards to the dance floor surrounded by terraces overlooking from above. Some really memorable nights there!

Had some of the best nights in my life there!
Sasha’s Involver tour would easily be number one, closely followed by Amon Tobin and Krafty Kuts.

Saw Kendrick Lamar play here years before most people even knew who he was. Absolutely awesome. He wore a trench coat the whole show

So many great gigs. The best being Kylie playing the Anti Tour set twice in a single night!

Last place I saw the Bad Seeds when you could still accurately call them the Bad Seeds… shortly after I moved to Aus.
Every time I go past, I’m a bit sad it can’t happen again

I saw the Stereophonics there in 2013 and it was caving in on itself from craic. Unreal. They came on after the encore and said, if anyone’s free tomorrow come back and we’ll play again for free. The vibe of the place was unmatched, like the unruly sibling of the forum or something. Such a shame I never saw anything else there

They campaigned for 7 years to save it then finally got the council to act….. almost….. the front facade was heritage protected, but none of the interior was! The council set a date to vote on protecting the interior but the bloody foreign owners got in first by covertly entering into the building on a SUNDAY evening and tearing up the interior (sone of it going back to at LEAST 1905!) so when the council gathered to vote t here was nothing left to protect! 🤬 They demolished the entire building except for the protected facade which they painted stark white and built a “boutique” hotel behind it 🤬
A few years back, I was involved in its Demolition. This is what it looked like after we cleaned up and prepared for construction 🚧 of the new Hotel. Sorry folks.
