I live in a village just outside of grimsby and have been following the meetings about the proposed AI data centre.

So far the impression I have had is some of the locals have done some searches on facebook and come to the conclusion that it would be as noisey as an air port and as polluting as the oil refineries situated right next to it…

We had the third meeting last week and it seemed more like the locals wanted feelings to be validated than hearing anything from the developers with one person claiming it would drain the electricity from everyones homes and slowdown the already shoddy internet in the area. Truth be told, I’ve been trying to get open reach to push with installing fiber to the area but the main reason they haven’t is local opposition to them digging up the paving to lay the wires and the locals wonder why infrastructure is so poor here.

    2. Regardless of what it’s used for, a site that size would mean years of noisy and disruptive construction, which no one wants.

But is it really news that a *Parish Council* is holding a planning meeting?

    3. So Grimsby is one of the towns left behind. There’s no work and young people are leaving in droves.

So we don’t want new industry in the area.

Why is there so little investment into the UK???

Why are other countries overtaking our economy?

Why is there such little growth?

Why are house prices so high?

Such a mystery! Anyway, got to go block some new development 20 minutes away from my house on an empty field because it is not in character with the rest of the neighbourhood and will ruin my view. Tata

Data centres run on electricity. The site itself doesn’t pollute anything except slightly warm air.

    6. The same people moan that London gets all the investment.

Because Londoners let them build stuff there.

The are worried that the data in the centre might leak out into the water supply. They’re scared that if they then drink this polluted water, they might actually learn something.

    8. There is concern that electromagnetic radiation from data centres could cause cancer. Not sure if there is any truth to this claim or if this is another conspiracy theory like 5g masts.

Edit: Looks like Grimsby is not alone, residents of Seoul forced a company to give up on constructing a data centre due to concerns around radiation.

Poor villagers. Should have not upset our AI lords. They will go first when the AI robot wars begin in a few years.

    10. Labour has the right idea with planning reform. NIMBYs have held this country back for far too long

AI ad cryptocurrency both require a huge amount of energy to keep them operating. Both industries are a huge threat to the world’s national grids and to our environment. They will drive up demand for power and local people will find themselves struggling with power cuts, as well increased pollution from factories. AI companies will lobby governments to get around environmental laws too. There is a lot of money to be made in AI and no company will want environmental red tape holding them back.

    12. well its possible.

Data centres do use a lot of power and if it isnt green power yes they are polluting.
