  1. EU chief groups country led by a dictator among other countries led by a dictator. More news at 11

  2. I mean… Turkey hold EU candidate status like it means something… it does not.

And after stating the intention of joining EU decades ago, all what Turkey did was distance itself from Europe and constantly pick incompatible values through Erdogan and what not.

I know Turkey is important regional player but this piece makes it seem like it’s second US, and that without turkey there are issues beyond comprehension for EU future…

Ursula just expressed lack of patience we all have for Turkey. Stop pretending you want to be European or truly become European nation. Nothing wrong in picking your own way but then just don’t pretend to care about EU.

  3. This is utterly disrespectful to put Turkey, a EU candidate, a NATO member, a European ally into the basket with Russia and China.

Turkey literally does most of the air patrols for Romania and Baltics. Stopped millions of Syrian refugees from going to the EU. Helping Ukraine against the war with Russia.

Whichever lobby is making her deliver this speech, must be very powerful.

  4. israel doing his part on that im sure, now they want to destory turkiye after iran.

Given how Netanyahu’s government has recently started talking talking about going after them next, I can’t help but feel that this statement is the EU preemptively throwing Turkey under the bus so they can avoid criticising Israel

“We must succeed in completing the European continent so that it does not fall under Russian, Turkish, or Chinese influence,” von der Leyen stated. “The old model—relying on cheap Russian energy, low-cost Chinese labor, and unconditional American security—is dead. We must think bigger, move faster, and act more independently.”

There’s not much of an argument to make against this statement.

  7. I don’t think the Secretary of General of NATO who is currently in Ankara endorses this sentiment

In a time where EU is moving closer to Turkey military in response to Russian aggression and an eratic America , she chooses to alienate NATO’s second largest military

  8. So the part about Turkey is weird. But EU thinks of China as a threat to be countered, then many diplomats go there to form great diplomatic relations and a couple weeks after once again they say that China is a threat.

  9. lost_in_existence69 on

And the same people came to Türkiye for arms and diplomatic help. I mean… Yeah it’s a great idea to offend one of your key partners in the region, which could also help with a potential Russian threat. Gj

Incredibly stupid honestly. Turkey isnt an ally but a valuable partner and for now a lot of our interests do align. This is causing friction without reasons

Turkey is very important in containing especially Russia in the middle east and caucasus and incredibly important for our energy security in the future. Its so childish to publish something like they did

  11. DifferentAspect4836 on

VdL grew up surrounded by slaves around her house, she doesn’t get to say much honestly.

Putting Turkey and China together with Russia in the same pot and leaving US and Israel out of it altogether is crazy stupid diplomatic talk.

VdL doesn’t know shit about politics, she just pissed that she was put on the couch

  12. Tbf grouping any one with Russia is short sighted. A) we play right in to hand of Russia, by grouping them in B) there is only one nation that invades a nation in Europe, China or Türkiye are no were near as hostile.

  13. attilathetwat on

This is clearly Israel driving the European agenda again because of the stance Erdogan is taking on the ongoing situation in the Middle East

What decent human being would not be against a genocide?

if EU wants to see the real threat, we could just open the doors and you can meet with suicidal refugees which you are stocking in our country.

ursula never surprises, as israeli ambassador to EU.

Yet they’ll happily take reffined Russian oil from them.

    Diplomacy is complicated.

  16. If she could just STFU for once, I still remember when she was pushing for russian gas in EU and laughing about warnings that it’d be a terrible thing, saying “Europe and in particular Germany can see the change occuring in russia”, as if an already genocidal Putin who invaded Crimea 4 years ago was the dream partner to put all of EU under his energetic umbrella. Yeah, of course, that was gonna end REALLY WELL, am i Ursula?

She’s part of the problems we have now, because she’s contributed a lot for these problems to be possible today with all of her “work” a decade ago. Corrupted AF german *bourgeoisie*.

This really worrying. Yes, Turkey won’t be a member state but making them an enemy is just worrying.

Okay, I know a lot of you guys don’t like Turkey because of; lack of democracy and Cyprus.

Cyprus was an invaded country long before her entrance. This is a fact that EU accepted.

Lack of democracy? Saudis are not democracy and EU has no problem to work with them

So what are the benefits of having Turkey as a partner?
Have a large military to participate in Baltic missions.
    Buffer zone to middle eat.
    Bosphorus.
They can help EU to gain control over Black Sea with Ukraine.

What are the benefits of having Turkey as an enemy?
    I don’t know..
Together with Israel, EU can try to weaken Turkey.
Thus having a non powerful, easy to manipulate country that can do what EU wants but this is a stupid game and stupid games only rewards you with stupid prizes.

Turkey knows that world is changing and they want to be inside EU block. You can see this with their recent actions. There is a chance for both EU and Turkey but I think VdL is in the block that favors Israel

What about those damn Germans that started two world wars? Get your act together Ursula.

Yes that’s a moronic fucking statement. Is a little political competence from people in high office too much to ask these days?

  20. Altruistic-Place on

She is a disgrace to the swedish people. Wonder how much money she has invested in Israel?

  21. The EU commission really needs to go if EU is to go any further. It is disconnected from the will of the European citizens.

  22. Shirolicious on

What a weird thing to say, and I can see why Turkey would take offence since its coming from such a high level also.

Good atleast to see there is also internal backlash, showing that other EU politicians/members dont agree with that statement as well

  23. BlueHeartbeat on

I see a lot of comments talking about Israel and Turkey going to war. While they hate each other and maybe would love to take a shot, it would be insane for both of them to start a war with each other.
From Turkey’s side cause they’d obviously hear eagles squawking in the sky immediately; but on Israel’s side, even if no one in NATO were to back Turkey (which is questionable) the turkish military is not something to scoff at, they’d be absolutely fucked.
Another proxy war in Syria is far more likely imo.

  24. Considering that Turkey behaves just like Russia did before invading Ukraine it’s one of the rare times I agree with her.
