According to Helsinki Mayor Daniel Sazonov, the city and employment services are suspending the issuance of grants for several weeks in order to streamline the process. Photo: Antti Kolppo / Yle

Helsinki Mayor Daniel Sazonov (Coalition Party) received on Monday evening the explanation he had requested regarding city grants used to pay the salaries of three employees of the Sun Ray association.

Helsingin Sanomat reported on Saturday that the city had paid over 45,000 euros in employment grants to the Sun Ray association, which sends children from Finland to “Artek” in occupied Crimea.

Sazonov says the city would not have provided support to the association had it known about Sun Ray’s ties to Russia.

According to the mayor, the city is using all means to recover the grant funds.

    – The city’s lawyers are considering ways in which the funds could be recovered.

Sazonov is an ethnic russian himself. Not sure how he has managed to become Helsinki mayor. I think this case should be investigated by SUPO

    2. I can’t help but feel that if Yle news can figure out the ties these organizations have, probably whoever is dishing out these funds should be able to figure it out too.. I mean before they’ve already given the money.

Do they do any research at all?

    3. The whole story has been really blown up for political propaganda in order to attack the mayor. I didn’t vote for him so I have no interest to defend him. But it’s so obvious there is an agenda to discredit him only because he has Russian origin.
Of course the city of Helsinki wouldn’t ever grant money to such associations if their goal was declared as such in the open.
So the correct framing shouldn’t be “The City gave money to Russian propaganda” (active action) but “The City was scammed by Russian propagandists” (passive damage). Pretty different perspective imho.
