Birgit Weikel worked in home health care and in nursing homes until retirement. Today, she herself is dependent on home care – and very critical of how it works.

New faces every week, staff who barely know Swedish and the disgusting thought of having to be showered by a man. Birgit Weikel, 74, in Landskrona has had enough and roars:

– That will be enough now. Healthcare politicians must rethink and do the right thing, she says.

Birgit herself has long experience of caring for sick people in their homes and in nursing homes and has a perspective on how it worked in the past compared to today.

Not even in her wildest imagination could she imagine that it would get this bad when she got old herself.

– As far as home care is concerned, it was really better for, she says.

It is a Thursday afternoon when Året Runt meets Birgit in her apartment in the residential area Ringvägen in Landskrona. On this particular day, she has a visit from staff from the home service because it is her activity time.

– I get two hours a week when home care staff come and help me with something I want to do. It can be a walk so I get out if the weather is nice or we go shopping in a store.

After a long working life, we expect a secure old age. But how safe is it today?

In Alla’s review of home care, we talk about the neglect and about those who do their utmost to help. About system errors but also about the good examples.

Want the politicians to listen

This Thursday it is an old colleague from her own time in home care, so she has chosen to have an afternoon coffee and talk instead of going out. On the coffee table in the living room, she has laid out coffee and cinnamon buns.

No one takes us into account

Despite the presence of home care staff, she does not hold back with her criticism of how she thinks it works today.

– I can’t keep quiet, she says. I am active in several different online groups, including Omsorgskampen (the association that was started by care assistant Pia Andersson to draw attention to shortcomings in elderly care, ed. note) and I write to the politicians here in Landskrona and protest.

– I want the politicians and civil servants to listen to us older people. As it is today, they have no regard for us.

Birgit is careful to emphasize that it is not the staff’s fault that home care has deteriorated.

– In the midst of the corona pandemic here in Landskrona, the municipality introduced something called a minute schedule. They mean that you calculate to the minute how many minutes each care recipient will have a visit from the home service. Crazy!

– Imagine that you get to control people to the minute and detail. Both us who need help and those who have to work with it. Imagine that the staff has 15-20 visits during a work shift, day or night. There can’t be much quality out of it.

A man is holding a shower head.

What she finds most frightening is how the quality of home care has deteriorated in recent decades.

– I myself worked in home care and in nursing homes for 20 years and my mother lived in a nursing home in Helsingborg for ten years, so I have some experience. In addition, I talk to the staff I meet today, especially those I previously worked with, says Birgit and continues.

– A 45-year-old man who came here told me that he showered five people during the same work shift, both men and women. I hope I never get so sick that I need help to shower. I’d rather die than be showered by a man. It would have been offensive.

New staff all the time

Birgit herself has been dependent on home care since 2001. It started when she was affected by coral kidney stones and had neuropathic pain. It got so bad that she was forced to stop working and become a disability pensioner, as it was called at the time.

– I was no more than 50 years old when I got sick, she says. I tried to get back into working life, was on sick leave on and off for three years, but in the end it didn’t work anymore.

Over the years, she has become more and more dependent on help and when relatives have not been able to come forward, she has had to turn to the municipality.

– Today I am entitled to home care for two hours and five minutes a week. Besides the hours on Thursdays, they come on Tuesdays and help me with simpler things like taking out the garbage.

She gets help with laundry via a company that the municipality hires, and she orders the food herself via a local company.

– For the home care I receive, I pay the highest fee of SEK 2,650 a month. It’s a lot, but on the other hand, I don’t pay more if I need more hours a week.

What she would like is for the same staff to come to her home every week.

– It was better before, but since they introduced the minute schedule, the new one comes all the time. The crazy thing is that the municipality introduced the new schedule in the middle of the corona pandemic. As the elderly and sick, according to the Public Health Agency, we would certainly not meet so many unknown people.

Birgit can see it from the staff’s point of view as well.

– They don’t have a chance to get to know the care recipients. And it pays off if they complain. Their views are not heard.

– During the summer, there are a lot of temporary workers and sometimes there are staff who can barely speak Swedish. It is sad both for them and for us care recipients when we cannot make ourselves understood.

Birgit has even met staff from home care who did not greet her when they arrived and barely said a word.

– It shouldn’t be allowed to happen like that, she says.

  9. Lopsided-Brother9007 on

  13. PsychologicalOil9548 on

  14. Men men vinst!! Men men sänka skatten!! Men men privatiseringar!! Men men KPI:er!!
