Councils are going bankrupt, of course something needs to be done about it. Can’t just continue ignoring the problem and hope it goes away.
The fact that this tax has not really been talked about makes me think Labour are definitely going to propose rises here.
And that would be a good thing.
If they actually want to fix things [and get me to vote for them] they’d need to pull something like replacing council tax with LVT out their arse.
I fully understand why they’re not going to do this because they’d suddenly have every single paper screeching about a “garden tax”.
I’m utterly fed up of the only barometer being if a party will rule in or out tax rises.
Clearly no party simply wants to raise taxes. But if we want stuff it needs to be paid for.
Where is the discussion on the really interesting things, like GB Energy? This plan for rail nationalisation and all the exciting stuff in the manifesto

Not having full visibility of public finances means Labour can’t be 100% in any assurance around tax rises. For Starmer to guarantee “no tax increases for working people” is a dangerous game.

The issue here is everyone is saying they need to rise if we want things.
But people can’t afford their mortgage, bills and even food costs now. How can people pay more? People can’t afford to pay even more.
Taxes are going to rise and they need to if the next government wants to fix this mess. Let’s just accept it and get over it.
