Vipera berus, European adder. Venomous, but it won’t bite you unless you fuck with it or step on it unwittingly.
They’re venomous but pretty chill bois and protected by nature conservancy laws.

Yes, it’s a vipera berus. Seek medical care if bitten, though for most healthy adults a bite should not be an immediately life threatening situation AFAIK. This type of dangernoodle can also be black without a visible zigzag pattern.
With all that being said, please do not kill it! They are a protected species. There’s guides online about how to safely remove it from your yard using a bucket and a rake, and release it somewhere more suitable.
Keep your distance from those things! They can move surprisingly fast when aggravated!

Please if you see one somewhere leave it alone and don’t post it’s location to internet. Normally they leave areas with human trafic by themselves to sunbathe in peace. Some sick fucks like to trespass just to kill them

The only venomous animal in finland, if you dont count bees etc mild stuff. Leave it be, they are not aggressive or trying to eat you
Unfriendly snek. And illegal to kill them, so avoid them – make some stomping noise to let them know you’re around.

Yes. Stomping the ground will make them scurry away, they usually do not let you come this close. We have plenty of them in the old family farm, you just stomp the ground when you walk and they will get the fuck out of dodge. Very shy and almost impossible to see unless they are basking on rocks. They love the concrete stairs facing south in the farm but usually you just see a tail disappearing in the grass and you can’t find it even if you tried.
Takes quite a bit to make them angry too, they have to be cornered and see no other option than to fight. You can even mess with them a bit, as long as they have open ground they will just try to get away from you (i don’t mean hurt them, i don’t know what would happen then since i’ve never hurted one…i see them more as friends, they help with rodent problem..). But, best advice is to step back a few steps, then stomp on the ground to announce you are there and in what direction you are.
They venom is not dangerous to healthy adult BUT if you have bee allergy, you got to carry snake pack with you. It has strong hydrocortisol that helps with the symptoms, and it is advisable to contact health professionals it you get any shortness of breath. Most cases are just “monitor your situation, do not stress yourself”. The venom is same, or at least very close to bee venom, and they don’t release copious amounts of it either. The venom is really only enough to kill small rodents. Them striking at boots and not getting thru is most common outcome with random encounter with an European adder, their fangs are not very long, and their first bite is a warning. If i remember right, young adders have more concentrated venom and have less control over the release, so it will be locally much more painful.
Common european adder, it’s venomous but not life-threatening. They don’t attack unprovoked so just leave it be and it’ll do the same.
