Most people only visit Cahir Castle but there is a whole other side to explore. I’ve been very interested in the Quaker influence on the area and decided it was time to check out Garranalive burial ground today. It’s only a few minutes outside of the town and is quite magical!
Continued on the Tipperary Heritage Way along the Suir to an ancient stand of Yew woodland nearby. The Swiss Cottage (contained within) may have originally been a Quaker settlement too.

The first Quakers to arrive were the Fennells in 1659: [https://tipperarystudies.ie/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/The-Fennells-of-Cahir.pdf](https://tipperarystudies.ie/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/The-Fennells-of-Cahir.pdf)
I believe that the third picture is of William Fennell:
*The last thing I’ll say about angling in Cahir, as I mentioned before, we’re very famous for our Quakers in this town. We had a guy called William Joshua Fennell from a beautiful house called Ballybrado, just down the river. And he was passionate about angling and preservation of the fisheries, so much so that he campaigned and campaigned and he got the legislation for fisheries preservation changed in Ireland and Britain. So much so as well that there’s an Act of Parliament in England, in the Statute books called Fennell’s Act. So there’s a long, long history of angling in this town.*

Wow, what a beautiful resting place 🙂
What a beautiful burial ground 😍
The bluebells are gorgeous, always remind me of spring at home. Thanks for sharing these.
The quakers had an influence in Ireland. They set up at least 4 secondary schools. I attended one. The IFI in Temple Bar is a firmer Quaker meeting house. They were never numerous, but had an effect, for the good I suggest.
I did a doubletake when scrolling and thought there had been an earthquake in Cahir!
