Still can’t help but grasp that one little way to make a shit situation worse. If someone is seeking an abortion, it can be assumed they’re sure and making people agonise for 72 hours accomplishes what, exactly?
It shouldn’t be anyone else’s fucking business.

Fully support the motion women would have thought it through prior to going to their GP.

Wasn’t it also to decriminalise abortion up till birth, that could have had something to do with it

Why don’t they make the three day waiting period not count for the twelve week limit? Must be agonising if you’ve made your mind up and have make two visits to the GP.

Surprised but very relieved. I thought for sure this would pass by a couple of votes.

How anyone can be in favour of limiting abortion in this way I’ll never understand. Our country pretends to be compassionate and understanding but this shows how close minded many of us can be. REPEAL

What a load of fucking bullshit. I’m going to email any TDs in my constituency who voted against this and make sure they know they’ll never get another vote from me for as long as I live.

Remember this when FG, FF or SF try to tell you they’re socially progressive parties – they’ve all got one foot very firmly in the 1950s and always have had.
The fringes like Aontú and the various independents seem to be in the U.S. far right orbit – hardly surprising.

I’ll never understand the logic behind the waiting period.
Do they think people are, on a whim, choosing to walk into the clinic? It’s one of the hardest things you will ever do, and they give you 3 days to sit and think about that before they agree.
It is cruel, it is outdated, and as always, it is pandering to those religious bastards who rub shoulders with them.

Comments acting like we just banned abortion.
There’s nothing wrong with a short period for a woman to assess all her options. The defeat doesn’t mean she can’t have a termination now

It was a rule brought in to help placate yes voters who were a bit on the fence. The anti abortion crowd said it’d be the thin end of the wedge and in the future it would mean abortions galore.
Hhhmmm …the crazy anti abortionists may have been correct.

The hits keep rolling in with this government. Not only do they not make progress on pretty much any area from housing to health to infrastructure, but they actively block improvements to citizens health and well being laws.
Again we all deserve this, no matter what they do or more usually don’t do, they get voted back in time and time again. It definitely doesn’t help that the main opposition is Sinn Fein who are equally incompetent and politically inept. This was such an easy win for them politically and they somehow end up voting against it.

If the bill had merely sought to remove the 3-day waiting period, I’m fairly sure it would’ve passed.
Unfortunately the SocDems tabled additional parts to the bill which went beyond what Marie O’Shea’s review had recommended.

There were two main controversial elements to the bill, the first was removing the 3 day waiting limit. The second was changing the rules for termination for Fatal Foetal Abnormalities
“Terminations can be carried out where there is a risk to the life, or of serious harm, to the pregnant woman, or where there is a condition present that is likely to lead to the death of the foetus either before or within 28 days of birth. The Bill proposes the removal of the 28-day limit.”
Sinn Fein voted against it because of this second proposed change.

So infantilising. A grown woman can’t make a decision about her own body without this patronising shite. Embarrassing.

Where would one find the breakdown of how TDs voted? I would like to contact my local TD if they voted against, and encourage you all to do the same!
