The Cuban goverment is fully in control, there’s not even much of a hint of any organized opposition left, at the same time if this degree of deprivation doesn’t trigger even a very disorganized popular uprising, nothing ever will.

The US embargo only prevents US companies from trading with Cuba. Other countries can still trade with Cuba. Russia and Mexico have been sending them oil and fuel. If Cuba is running out of fuel, it’s because the Cuban government is incompetent and doesn’t care about the people of Cuba. This is another reason why dictatorships are the worst form of government. Dictatorships never care about the people. They only care about maintaining their illegitimate rule.

    3. It’s weird how embargos work when you actually enforce them and don’t just say they exist. It’s almost like laws aren’t actually laws without proper enforcement.

President Kennedy put those embargos in place in 1962. Argue about the value of them or not all you want, but one thing is very obviously clear from this. Now that they are being properly enforced, they are working as intended. That’s one real, concrete logical lesson to learn from this. Laws without enforcement aren’t really laws.

If this is because Cuba is communist and not because we’ve had a 60 year long embargo, why don’t we just lift sanctions and watch them fail without our interference? I don’t get how this is because they are communist, but we have to get involved. If their being communist is so bad for them, why are we doing anything?

A common misconception is that the embargo is a complete blockade.

      It is not:

      * Cuba trades with many countries besides the U.S.
      * Food and medicine exemptions exist under U.S. law
      * The U.S. has actually been a significant exporter of some agricultural products to Cuba at times

    6. A month or two ago I saw a video about Cuba under Trumps blockade and it looked absolutely dire, waste collection stopped, people eating out of bins, travel halted, ambulances and such while fueled by government were rare due to lack of fuel, prices in stores were like a couple of weeks wage for so much as a loaf of bread if any stock at all.

Place must literally have people dying of starvation by now, shocking how it’s essentially never been reported in the media, even the Gaza genocide that didn’t happen has had more air time than Cuba.

Why didn’t they adopt renewable energy years ago? I saw some solar panels coming into their country so why didn’t the government actually be smart about it and plan forward to anticipate something like this??

    10. Let’s be clear: Until this administration the US had an embargo on Cuba. This isn’t an embargo. This is actively blocking shipments in. That’s not an embargo, that’s a blockade. And blockades are an act of war.

There is no blockade of Cuba.

Anybody that wants to sell fuel to Cuba can.

The problem is, and always has been, they dont have …. have never had …. the money to pay the global asking price for fuel.

Cuba has a long history of not paying its bills. Several countries extended it loans, and got stiffed.

The only countries that send fuel to Cuba, such as China, Russia, or Venezuela do it for ideological reasons, they dont want the optics of starving communists to destroy their own narratives.

But right now, if Cuba had the money to pay for it, they could get fuel deliveries just like anyone else, who’s paying for it , can.

The problem is not the US …… its a political and economic system that leaves them nothing valuable to barter with for international trade.

    12. Possible_Ground_9686 on

Crazy, Reddit just told me yesterday they had plenty of oil and that the embargo wasn’t working.

    13. Cuba can trade with 140 countries. These include places like China, Russia, Bangladesh and North Korea who do not give a crap about US sanctions or an embargo.

This is 100% on the Cuban government and nobody else.

“Cuban thaw” during Obama administration was a change to improve relations that ended when new admin came in.

The US: Cuba is communist and is killing its civilians!
Also the US: Sets up blockade that will result in thousands of deaths.

    16. Damn, Hassan should have brought some oil with him during his Cuba propaganda trip.

Its sad how the USA has done more harm to Cuba than Cuba has to cuba.
