>The hackers responsible have exploited automatic tank gauge (ATG) systems that were sitting online and unprotected by passwords, allowing them in some cases to tinker with display readings on the tanks but not the actual levels of fuel in them, the sources said.
Good god I wonder what else is sitting online without any sort of protection.. what a disgrace
Not surprised.
They kinda already said they were diluting the gas to keep prices from rising too fast didn’t they? Theres already been a few places in my city putting their thumb on the scale to get more money out of you (they have already been reported but its a problem that is likely to get worse)
Orange turd is making things so much better.
I’ve seen a few comments on other subs about stations running out of gas or out of one particular kind of gas. I was thinking it’s probably people fuelling up more often to avoid being jacked as the prices rise but now I wonder if it’s because the stations didn’t know the tanks were getting low?
Back when I pumped gas in NJ we had to stick the tanks and read the pumps twice a day to gauge how much was sold and how much was left. But hooray for the tech bros who automated that job.
Is it even hacking when they sit online without authentication at all?
Like is it hacking now to access a website? 2026 is wild.
Reason number 234 to go ev.
Don’t spend too much time thinking about all the bussineses and tech companies that rely on hardware and software from the late 70s and never upgraded because it still “works”.
Or entire databases being propped up by Excel.
You’ll lose sleep at night.
Do the officials ever wondered that there is a possibility that the hackers are Americans who are pissed off at the amount of bullshit happening to their gas prices?
Copilot you’ve failed us!
that isnt hacking, thats the equivalent of taping your passwords to your monitor and being shocked that someone else accessed your computer.
Can they get us rid of the ads?
Calling them hackers… when there was no password, seems… generous.
is copy and pasting port numbers from Shodan hackerman now?
It’s a good thing the Trump administration got rid of the actual professionals who were in charge of Cyber Security cuz they were useless DEI…
Cuz this never happened with them but it’s happening with us now cuz it’s Obama and Biden’s fault….
/S ..
Do we think Iran would do something this trivial? I mean if they are going to do something I would think it would be more impactful
Can’t be Iran they don’t have any capabilities left. Donny said so!
Some ATGs have been around for over 30 years. They literally had simple cisco dial up modems connected to them that you could dial into like a fax and had no other significant security at all.
Many retailers at stations just don’t invest in certain things until they break. “Someone else” is suppose to do it.
Now, these things basically only have information like tank & testing status as well as inventory levels. These things are not connected to anything else. So, it’s not like you could break into card networks or personal files, but still crazy that they have left these things unchanged and insecure for so long.
I love how Iran, barring selling drones to Russia and wherever, was basically an international nothingburger for decades, but now that Trump wants to sell them as today’s Great Enemy to Focus on Instead of the Epstein Files they can pull five different magic tricks every day somehow.
Now hack into the system and make all gas prices 0.86 cents
Row, row, row your boats
Can the Iranian hackers unlock free gas at the pumps?
Trump: Iran has hacked our gas stations and is inflating the prices. If it weren’t for this hack, gas would be at $1.98!
As someone who works IT it’s so gross how the world doesn’t understand the importance of security. IT budgets are a fraction of what they should be and I suspect the gas station readers are fucking ancient.
> The sources briefed on the investigation said Iran’s history of targeting the gas tank systems is one reason the country is a top suspect. But, the sources cautioned, the U.S. government may not be able to definitively determine who was responsible because of a lack of forensic evidence left by the hackers.
So, zero evidence it’s Iran then.
