    1. I’ve been with Plex since they forked from XBMC. Raising the cost while keeping the ads WILL make me switch to something else.

Lol fuck off, not paying the equivalent of 3y of Netflix just to remote stream local files 😂 was looking to buy it at a sale but now I’d much rather just use Jellyfin or just upload to the devices to play locally. Also Plex app seems to just get shittier and laggier and the browser “app” is just pure crap.

My guess: Remote pass failed miserably, hosts just got the pass instead. Now the suckers want to suck the hosts dry to get the profits they couldn’t get with their original shitty plan.

I have a Plex pass and I still quit for Jellyfin. Plex gets worse and worse.

    4. I think I paid $75 for my lifetime pass. Love the features and simplicity of plex but would never pay $750

    5. Still no alternative that has a native player on every streaming device with a backend service that handles networking hand-shakes and firewall hole-punching like Plex does. My family on the other side of the country can stream by installing the app on their TV and signing in.

So far all the alternatives I’ve seen mentioned require VPN shenanigans?

So forgive my ignorance here but isn’t plex just like a host for your own movies/shows? It’s not like you’re paying this lifetime fee and then you can watch every movie/show that’s come out? Why would anyone pay $750 to I guess make their media library look prettier

    7. So, what if they go poof some day? Your money goes poof as well? $750 is a lot of dollar bills to go poof.

    8. PSA for anyone looking to replicate remote streaming. Jellyfin (or any Plex alternatives) + TailScale (quick google will get you sorted and it’s dead simple to setup).

No need for a reverse proxy or any further customization at that point. Jellyfin has a mobile app so you can stream media just like you could with Plex.

Thanks for the heads up, just got my lifetime pass upgraded from my annual. As it looks I plan to use it a lot, and even more with a baby on it’s way, so I can have the good stuff.

Jesus H Christ that’s a lot of money. I bought mine several years back when it was $100 at Christmas.

    11. Can anyone explain to me why it makes sense to pay a monthly subscription to stream pirated content to your TV?  am I missing a significant use case for this software?

I paid $99.00.a couple of years ago. WTF is going on? triple the price is insanity.

    13. CornerHugger on

Plex is worth less than it ever has been and their roadmap is clearly about getting ad revenue but sell your eyeballs. So this is a double strange decision. Is subscription revenue that value that they want to destroy the lifetime pass?

This feels like a way to push EVERYONE who was on the fence to buy right now.

    15. I’m glad I never got into Plex, Kodi is always free and open source, you do need to read a guide to get things set up, but it’s nothing too complicated.

If I see one more comment about paying 75 dollars a few years ago…

With Plex….. every movie and show out there. Great return if you plan to high seas everything.

I just keep using the old versions that don’t require a pass to access my home library. I’m sure they’ll eventually close that loophole, but I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

So happy I got mine awhile ago. If I had to do it all over again I’d go jellyfin no question.

    20. Good thing I bought mine right before in anticipation of the first hike. Lifetime for 150 bucks. Got my own 16TB HDD before the AI boom jacked prices up. I’m set.

    21. I bought mine last price increase from fomo and still havent even used it

If they ever terminate a lifetime pass I’ll sue the company immediately. It’s illegal to do so in the EU and I’ll start a class action lawsuit on the day of the announcement.

I have all 3: Plex, emby, jellyfin, and had to reconfigure Plex from scratch recently because I hadn’t started up the docker in over a year of updates and dataset drift.

Honestly I’m unclear what the Plex product is even supposed to be at this point – the streaming features take precedence over any media libraries you set up and the message I get navigating around the UI is that the media library is becoming an afterthought.

Emby has such a clear lead because it’s sticking to a lane.

    24. Remember when Plex was just Xbox media center and didn’t cost a goddamn thing

Goodbye Plex hello jellyfin…. I cancelled my Plex account yesterday…. It seems that greed comes to all companies eventually

Announcing that it’s a month away seems like just a way to get a massive revenue increase over the next 30 days
