Yes, NGOs attempting to help people often have to “work with” the de-facto government in the place they are working.

For those who don’t know, the National Post is basically the Canadian equivalent of Fox News. I have no doubt that some amount of international aid money ended up in the hands of terror groups, but the National Post is not the place where you should expect honest details on the specifics.

The leaders of those charities should be arrested and thrown in prison. They are criminals with blood on their hands.

That’s totally a national post headline.

Those are quite severe allegations against some very prominent charities.
The two big charities explicitly accused of being Hamas-affiliated in the article are:
* [Catholic Relief Services](https://en.wikipedia.org/wikiCatholic_Relief_Services)
– member of Caritas International, the worldwide network of Catholic humanitarian agencies
– provides assistance to 130 million people in more than 110 countries and territories
– has a $1.5 billion budget, about half of it funded by USAID
– has approximately 5,000 employees around the world
* [Handicap International](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handicap_International)
– founding member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines which received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997
– founding member of the Cluster Munition Coalition
– ranked the 8th best international NGO in the world in 2017

National Post is a shithole USA owned ‘media’ company that is unfortunately allowed in Canada and reports knee-jerk reactionary pieces without much actual journalistic integrity.
Be careful when you read from them. They are our equivalent Fox News.

Here I thought I had seen the last of the NatPo trash on my Reddit feed after being banned from the Canada sub for pointing out the irony in a article about foreign interference when they are a foreign organization themselves.

What people forgot is that Hamas was the government. I do not know a single place in the world where a charity can act in isolation without interacting with the local government. If they spend any money in the area, they are supporting the government. If the government is a terrorist organization, they are supporting a terrorist organization. This is what makes aid and relief work in those areas so difficult; by virtue of trying to help people in that place you run the risk of inadvertently supporting terrorism.
Canada has a government body (RAD, a subsection of the tax authority in Canada) whose job is to look into charities for potential financial abuse, including money laundering, connections to crime, and connections to terrorism. This is all stop a repeat of the Air India Flight 182 terrorist attack from happening again; the single largest terrorist attack in Canadian history and the deadliest aviation terrorist attack until 9/11.
If RAD determines you have been supporting terrorim, that’s it. You lose your ability to operate as a charity in Canada. So, for many charities, it is safer to simply not operate in areas with terrorist governments (eg. Palestine, Afghanistan, etc.). The morality of penalizing charities for operating in those areas is up for debate, but as a Canadian, I certainly wouldn’t want money I donate to a charity to help a terrorist organization purchase munitions used to kill innocent people or fund programs to indoctrinate youth into a life of hatred and violence.
