      Documented ones only, btw.

Most Asian countries (incl but not limited to Japan & South Korea) actually modify the death records to avoid classifying many cases as suicide, because it’s embarrassing & could bring shame to the family.

Usually per the request of the victim’s direct families.

I thought Canada would be at the top. You mean it’s worse in other places?

    3. In islam , suicide is a high sin and would put you to hell..

That’s why it’s very low in Muslim countries

Suicide bombers are a different story through

Maybe I’m buying into stereotypes here, but I’m a little surprised that France is higher than the Nordic/Germanic countries.

I wonder if part of it is being further from the equator since days get shorter.

    6. Uruguay is such a crazy outlier. it’s 24 per 100k which is more than triple that of brazil and argentina and nearly double that of Cuba which is 2nd place in latin america. They’re not OK

Why is Finland there? Are they sad because their HDI is too high?

USA, France and Austria surprises me.
All countries bordering Russia – LOL.

    9. Wouldn’t covid be a big factor for all these countries or were some of the suicide rates already rising before

    10. Maps like this isn’t the full truth.
My mother was woman council of Nunavut and part her job was knowing inuit statistics.
The main reason I went to live with my father (lives in the Maritimes) instead of my mother (lives in Nunavut) was that if Nunavut was it’s own country it would have of the highest suicide rate in the world.
That was from earlier 2000s so data could be different.
I knew about it from young age, (was on 50/50 split custody as a kid then age 5 started staying with my dad far away from were my mom lives an I’d ask questions why cant i live with mommy to, an would get explained why i cant and eventually told about the statistics.) which left me always felling very Fortunate that I got to grow up where I did. I used to fell guilty for even being slightly depressed

      Yay, representation!

Also I wonder if USA states and some other countries include euthanasia, iirc they have that legalized?

Remember that Finland is often cited as one of the happiest countries on Earth as well.

Damn per capita too? This economy is really pushing Americans to the brink for sure.

It looks like that developing countries where people are suffering from economic crisis have the least suicide rates especially ’em Africans over there.

    15. Well we can say very few are probably surprised by the US or Russia. Finland is just curious because it’s often said to be the happiest country in the world, though really that’s all just marketing slop.

panko-raizu is right about the older male loneliness thing, ive seen that come up in articles about uruguay before. its wild how much that pattern repeats across latam cultures too, the “not macho to ask for help” thing is so deeply ingrained. my grandpa was exactly like that, never saw a doctor until it was basically too late also as a latina this map is kinda surprising, i always assumed japan would be way higher given the cultural stereotypes people throw around
