Hey y'all, Ill get straight to it.
Basically, Im planning on moving into the granny flat out back that my sister was using because she's moving out, only problem is I need to figure out how to get reliably internet there, its pretty far from the nbn and modem, maybe 50~ feet, idk if this is alot or not but keep it mind it doesnt have a clear view to the flat at all, and the signal sems to have to go through multiple walls.
MY sister says the signal out there is pretty shit, will do a proper test of it later
Anyway, if I wanted to get a good connection to the internet/wifi from out there, how'd I go about it? Afaik cant get another nbn because its not a seperate address, I've heard you can maybe get it extended but idk about that and would appreciate resources for how to do so, only other options are 5g or starlink or some shit.
TLDR; Need internet to a granny flat out in backyard, maybe 50 feet from the router and past walls and shit, need something that would be good enough to game and discord call on with good stability. What are my options
EDIT: cooked up a crappy map here lol, if this helps https://imgur.com/a/TI2O6Mo

NBN Mesh network

Mesh system should do it
Ideally dig a little trench and run some conduit along the trench and pull a fibre line through. This would need a new switch on the granny flat and likely an upgraded router or new switch on the house.
Otherwise still dig the trench with conduit but run ethernet through it. Ethernet will need a surge protector in case of lightning at both ends. This will need a new switch or access point in the granny flat but won’t need an upgrade in the house.
Both of these options would have you accessing internet through the same account as the main house but with your own switch/access point in the granny flat.
Next option would be run an ethernet cable through your house to the closest room to the granny flat, connect that to an access point in the room which could give alright reception depending on wall material and distance
hook up a wifi router in repeater mode and connect a yagi antenna to it and point it at the flat.
Why are you measuring in feet
What the fuck
Go back to america
Also try burying a Cat6 cable in a conduit, probably the easiest way
This is probably the easiest – [https://www.amazon.com.au/TP-Link-EAP211-Bridge-Wireless-Indoor-Outdoor/dp/B0D4H6XRNM?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=A2509D8JL03SK8](https://www.amazon.com.au/TP-Link-EAP211-Bridge-Wireless-Indoor-Outdoor/dp/B0D4H6XRNM?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=A2509D8JL03SK8) – This link is already configured and paired.
Then put a Access Point inside her Granny Flat and Configure the WiFi.
Alternatively, get someone to install a solution for you. Depending on where you are in Melbourne, I can supply and install it.
A 15-20m Ethernet cable is under $50. Get a good quality one and pull one from the house to the flat.
If the granny flat has electricity, then use powerline adapters.

if the granny flat shares an electrical circuit with any outlet in the house you could use ethernet over power adapters then put a wifi router at the other end
Starlink
Does the flat utilise the same power as the main house? If so, use Powerline adaptors, they transmit data across the power cabling. It’s basically a brick that you plug into a power point, and each unit has an ethernet port. Run one ethernet cable from the router to a Powerline, then plug in another in the flat and run another ethernet cable from it to a simple access point. Super easy and works well.
Just trying to interpret your picture but is it showing that the laundry and desired location are less than 3mts apart?
Obviously cat 6 in conduit would be best but otherwise definitely mesh system.
Tplink deco X55 is probably best, it comes in a 3 pack. I would put 1 on the kitchen counter 1 in the laundry and 1 in the desired location.
If you buy on Amazon I think they have a 30 day return policy if your not happy, otherwise maybe market place
Get a Ubiquiti unifi UAP. Easiest and more reliable.
How about just get an old mobile and hotspot? Cheap and easy.
Few options, all operating on the assumption that you want to piggy back off of the houses main internet.
1) Run an ethernet cable, can be overhead or trenched. Put an access point at the other end.
2) Use a point-to-point access point. The house has one, and the granny flat has one. You point them at one another, and it’s great performance. Then you’ll need an access point.
3) Use some sort of mesh network. I’m not a huge fan of them, but they do work for a lot of people.
> What are my options
Conduit with fibre.
Conduit with Ethernet / cat6.
Wi-Fi mesh network. Directional antenna.
Microwave setup if you want to be super cool.
The biggest question is what is the budget?
You will likely need a switch or two, or 2-3 wireless devices. The cost goes up if you want a conduit to be professionally done as in Australia structured cabling is required to be installed by a licenced professional.
But you’ll get more traction on the homelab or home networking subs than you will on Melbourne.
This is not a “new problem” there’s just lots of options that can be confusing and can be $$$ so you kind of have to decide a budget and do research.
50 fest isn’t far for the right wireless setup
We have a similar situation – we have signal booster to increase the signal at the back of the house, to the studio. Our studio isn’t as far away as yours, and the signal booster doesn’t do a fantastic job. So I got a decent phone plan with ridiculous amounts of data and just use my phone as an internet hub. It works really well including for day long online workshops and the like.
Powerline adapter’s if you’re lucky and the house and bungalow share power.
Otherwise mesh routers, I have the same layout in the bungalow at my place with mesh routers, getting 400mbps easy in the bungalow.
Make sure council will actually let you do this. Council regulations banning secondary homes are why tiny houses never really took off here
Any copper cables ( inc Ethernet) must be prof installed if running between buildings. Use a mesh or ubiquiti unit, for gaming.
Powerline AV might work depending on switchboard wiring ( borrow one and test, esp latency)
Wireless, it’s plug and play
