>A farm worker who amputated the leg of a Far North Queensland pensioner using a circular saw has been found not guilty of murder.
>Kalman Tal, 66, paid banana picker John Yalu $5,000 cash to remove his leg at a public riverfront park in Innisfail in the early hours of February 19, 2022.
>During a four-day trial, the Supreme Court in Cairns heard Mr Tal claimed to have suffered years of pain in his leg, and had been offering locals cash for an amputation in the weeks leading up to his death.

But he was found guilty of manslaughter, which an honest headline would have mentioned

Why do so many reports say his leg was amputated when it was his foot?

Makes sense in a bizarre kind of way – the intent was obviously to live if he was going to get paid.
I can’t imagine how desperate I would be to want to amputate a mans foot off with a circular saw for cash…
That is so gross to imagine. Feel sorry for the both of them.

this is one of those headlines where you read it three times and it somehow gets worse each time

So sad. Surely a trip to hospital could have sorted out his foot pain…

I got offered a job in Innesfail years ago, and went up there to check out the place for a week on the employers dime before accepting.
The constant torrential rain and general dodgyness of everything had pretty much made me decide no, then this happened while I was up there and just solidified the answer.

I’m a bit confused by the actual decision to cut off his foot instead of his leg. I might have misunderstood so please let me know if I have, but cutting off a leg isn’t usually done by cutting at the ankle?

Sounds like the first episode of an Australian reboot of Fargo.

I really feel sorry for both people here. This is such a bizarre case. Really seems like two stupid desperate people coming together to do something that resulted in death. Hard to feel this guy really deserves to go prison.
