Not trying to start a cost of living thread but I collect old vhs tapes and I just opened one I’d bought today and this fell out – I thought it was so interesting and figure others might too.
The VHS was Romero and Juliet and they paid nearly $30 for it, also looked like they really liked peas

Love to see the inflation and market up on wormer tabs.
Suddenly feel a lot better about my diet, at least they flossed.
I can hear the dot-matrix printer just looking at that.
Back when they didn’t fade straight away. I have Woolies receipts for tax purposes from a few months ago that I already can barely read.
Loved the shop a dockets on the back. Used to get some great movie deals on them.
Both kinds of peas, minted AND mushy.
500g of cheese for $3.61, what a time to be alive
The Romeo&Juliet isn’t a cigar..is it?
2L of laundry detergent for what?
I wanna know the story behind pine/orange drink, then pine/orange drink, item cancelled, then a few items lowers, another pine/orange drink.
Fun fact: UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski used to play amateur Rugby League for the Warilla Gorillas
they were on the coke and carbs diet that was popular back then.
18 pack of coke for 9.99
$30 for the movie, forever instead of a Netflix subshition
inb4 the horde of comments misunderstanding how purchasing power works
No one ever paid for two tickets to the gala. Best little cinema.
Wtf you buying Kleenex brand tissues yet home brand cheese 😭😭
Never saw romero and Juliet – was that the straight to vhs sequel?
Woolworths was open til midnight??
OP. With some exceptions – Romeo and Juliet – see if you can price similar items from the same store today.
Wow, check out those trading hours!
I’m glad you said it was from someone else’s vhs tape. Coz I was wondering how you are still alive after eating all that crap. I do admire the purchase of Romeo and Juliette (hopefully the Baz Lum version)
Luv dog food @ 2.49 per kg seems a little expensive but we all love our doggies! Also they got the wormer tabs (2 pack) for less than a fiver.
I wonder how this person and his/hers pup are doing 28 years later. Nice find op.
2.95 for 2L Bula ice cream is standing out to me
2 litres of laundry detergent for a dollar eighty?
Woah, buddy! Cover up that credit card information, you’ll get your money stolen! </s>
Ayeee rillla
“What’s for dinner?”
“Cheezy Peas”
Entire credit card number printed on the receipt lol
I remember these.
I remember id go over the ads on the back because sometimes they had pizza discounts or cinema discounts.
All this would be about 250 dollars today, adjusted for inflation
$2.95 for 2L bulla ice cream.
Adjusted for inflation using the RBA inflation calculator that would be $6.24 in 2025.
Current price: $6.00
$2.49 100pk kleenex tissues would be $5.27. Current price $2.70 for a 3 ply 95 pack. $3 for a 2 ply 200 pack.
$1.29 6pk cinnamon donuts would be $2.73. Current price $2.80.
Warilla had longer trading hours almost 39 years ago than Brisbane does now.
Some things haven’t increased that much.
Miss the discounts and deals on th back of receipts.
I just chucked the total ($119 in 1998) into [the Reserve Bank’s inflation calculator](https://www.rba.gov.au/calculator/annualDecimal.html). In 2025 money they paid $251.70. The calculator doesn’t do current year rates so you always have to pick last year’s rates to do a close comparison.
I always get suspicious when people go “Oh that was so cheap in 1998!” or whatever. Sure, in dollar terms, but what about inflation?
Anyway, I’m not gonna run the whole receipt through the calculator, but I picked out the Bulla 2L icecream for $2.95 and that would be $6.24 in 2025 money. I then went to the Woolies website and looked up 2L Bulla icecream. 2L basic Bulla vanilla is $6 flat. 2L Bulla Creamy Classics vanilla is $12 (Jesus Christ! what’s it made out of, real Bullas?). Bulla Murray St 1L Vanilla (their fanciest style) is normally also $12, but it’s half off right now so it’s $6, which is the same price per litre as the Creamy Classics one. Ice cream back in 1998 might have been much better or it might have been much worse – I know there were a lot fewer flavours – so I don’t know which Bulla would be equivalent.
Going by the trading hours, it definitely wasn’t from Queensland
$120 in 1998 is worth $250 in 2025.
I’d say for some items you’d be better off with today’s buying power.

From the days when they just printed the entire card number on the receipts.
It looks to be predominantly dairy products that had the biggest increase in price.
Obviously this was just prior to fruit and vegetables being invented.
