Japan’s youngest female mayor, Kawata Shōko, says she’ll take maternity leave. She’s the first sitting female mayor in Japan to do so. Some of the old guard, including an ex-military chief, said she shouldn’t have run for office. Online, most Japanese rushed to defend her.

Lead by example, a modern day hero
The *ex*-military chief can go straight to hell.
In this day and age I don’t think we need a mayor to begin with
This is why woman leaders are risky
Literally helping Japan’s low birth rate problem and people still complain, smh
we appreciate her!
Problem: Low to negative birthrate + not enough workers
Women: Working, birthing kids – need to take maternity leave to birth child and take care of it and recover from child birth.
Old Men: Complain.
The old guard can go suck a figurative cock.
Japan have a severe population aging problem, borderline catastrophic.
This Mayor is giving birth and they’re giving her shit? They should be celebrating her! Shining example of a career oriented women having children!
Bunch of senile old fucks.
Okay so no children from japanese women either, huh. Cmon ossan
While yes, a majority of replies supported her it’s worth noting that around a quarter didn’t. That’s ludicrous. Especially when there are structures in place for cover via the vice mayor, and she intends to still attend meetings remotely and be available for calls and emails.
She shouldn’t need to justify herself, but she has been in office for 3 years so it’s hardly like she ran for mayor while pregnant and intending to take time off – which I would still support anyway.
Exactly what vice mayors are for
