It is unwise to take Danielle Smith at her word.
Can she just shut the F up. Alberta is never leaving so this is all theatrics.
To anyone with critical thinking skills, it’s pretty obvious that she wants to get a vote out of the way, use it to shut down any future separatist talk, and move on.
If this is blocked by the courts and no vote ever happens, then this will either explode or simmer for decades. If 75-80 percent of the province says that they don’t want a binding referendum, as polls suggest, then it will be very difficult for any separatist group to make an argument for continuing their movement, and they will slowly become irrelevant.
It does not benefit Smith to have 15-20 percent of the province frothing at the mouth for separation.
I find it interesting that First Nations are the most likely to vote to leave despite the media portraying it as otherwise

Governance in representative democracy is not about taking a matter to a referendum anytime a minority expresses an opinion. That’s what polling is for. If you poll and see repeatedly that only around 25% of Albertans are interested in independence, that’s settled then. You don’t go and hold a costly referendum to find out that yeah, only 25% of Albertans want to be independent. Referenda are so stupid.

Moreover, since Alberta changes Premiers about as often as many change their underwear, what’s to stop the next Premier from holding another referendum?
She has opened a can of worms that will eat at the body politic of Alberta for generations, just like it has for Quebec. And look how much damage it has done to that province.

A promise from a politician is worth basically nothing. She will weasel out of it and way she can, and if she can’t or won’t, her handlers will have her replaced.
Let’s put this straight. Alberta’s separatism sits on a shaky foundation and it does not pose any real threat to Canada. Unlike Québec where they could build a “national” identity around French, Alberta does not have this element. Therefore the separatism in Alberta sounds more like a protest against Ottawa rather than a genuine desire to form a newly independent nation.

She ignored the survey result on whether we should create an Alberta Pension Plan and pushes for one despite majority opposition. Same with DST. She said she wouldn’t drop her other policy ideas regardless of the outcome of the other related referendum questions she is asking in October, and is even spending money to advertise her preferred outcomes on them despite claiming she expects majority support.
Zero reason to trust her. She says and does whatever she thinks will get her the most votes, even if it means doing a 180 on policy. Like going from “An aggressive target to double our population to 10 million” to running ads about how federal immigration is taking jobs away from the youth, and saying we need more control over immigration to reign it in. (Just ignore her letter to Trudeau asking to more than double the liberal allotment)
October 2027 can’t come fast enough, playing all sides is finally catching up with her. I just wish we had pushed the election forwards, not back, when it got moved out of fire season, BC did when they had the same policy shift. Danielle just saw it as an opportunity to extend her term by half a year. It’s wild to me that people threw a fit when the feds wanted a 1 week extension for pension benefits, but taking 6 months is fine for a premier.

Like, she can literally say that she will vote to remain – vote to separate – and that is *totally legal*. So it’s pointless to ask what she would support.
