I’m still upset that the phrase “fake news” got co-opted and used to dismiss real news. It started out as a term to describe false ideas that are presented to look like news. Very especially the stuff in the news bar that used to be on the right hand side of FB.

Remember when someone was basically irrelevant until he started calling the President a Kenyan and tabloids ran with it because it was “fun”?

    3. I remember seeing these as a kid in grocery stores and being both horrified and amazed at the photoshopping skills, and then thinking this is where the X-files gets its story ideas lol.

There used to be local idiots and they were kept in check by the people around them. Then the internet allowed the local idiots to get together and validate each other. Instead of getting weird looks and social rejection when they’d say “HUSSAIN OBUMMER is a GAY MARXIST from KENYA who is dating a MAN secretly named MICHEAL” now they get people going “Yuh-huh!” and “I knew it!” for any off the wall belief they care to have. This has created a massive problem, where they pull other people in who normally wouldn’t have fallen for it like some kind of black hole of stupidity and now measles have made a comeback

We really did have an “alien babies” phase in tabloids. There was a LOT of them. 😂
