Why does the attacker who caused the victum to suffer “undue hardship” get a break from facing “undue hardship” themselves? Why are people who are in charge of punishing attackers always on the attacker’s side?

Definitely wish I hadn’t read this. The teen will literally be traumatized for life in ways I can’t imagine. Due to the randomness off it, it seems no one is safe from this monster. Public safety should be the #1 determination in sentencing. That would keep a lot of these random assaulters and “likely to reoffend” people behind bars and away from the rest of us who actually work and keep the country afloat. Disgusting. Poor girl.

Are we asking for deportation in this case? Are we pointing out how uncultured and disgusting this behaviour is and stigmatizing a whole community based on it?

    4. His crimes are escalating in nature.

      > A court psychologist wrote that “Mr. Zewdu’s risk of sexual offending in the community is high,” adding: “The most likely victims are women. Risk scenarios including unwanted touching (e.g. slapping buttocks, grabbing, smearing feces), exposing his genitals in public, masturbating in public, verbal threats, and boundary violations.”

He will eventually rape and likely murder.

    5. Victimizing the offender while giving zero fucks for the victim. Par for the course. Should get a mouthful of feces in return since this behavior seems to be tolerated.

I would face undue hardship if I was penalized for incapacitating (in creative ways) anyone who tried doing this to anyone I care about

      >[2] On October 13, 2024, Mr. Zewdu exited a SkyTrain station at just after midnight and he approached a woman who was waiting for a bus and he slapped her buttocks. He then left the area. There were very few people in the area at the time. Mr. Zewdu was bound by a conditional sentence order at the time of this offence. This said, he was identified as the offender much later and therefore he was not charged with this offence until October 1, 2025.

      >Information 275333 – Assault

      >[3] On June 27, 2025, the victim, who was 17, was walking in a residential area near a SkyTrain station when Mr. Zewdu approached her from behind and grabbed her. He then smeared fecal matter over her face and mouth while pushing and jamming feces into her face and mouth. Mr. Zewdu was laughing as he held out his phone causing the victim to believe that Mr. Zewdu was recording the assault. A subsequent search of his phone showed that this was not the case.

      >[4] The assault stopped when the victim screamed and ran to a nearby residence where she called the police and cleaned herself. The police promptly attended and they located Mr. Zewdu as he was approaching a second woman. This woman had a stroller and Mr. Zewdu asked her to smell his feces covered hands.

      >[6] On July 11, 2025, Mr. Zewdu’s behaviour resulted in him being asked to leave an exotic strip lounge. Once outside, he went to the rear parking lot and he spotted a woman walking by. Mr. Zewdu approached the woman he threatened to kill her and to beat the “shit” out of her. Throughout, he had his penis exposed. The woman called the police and after a brief chase Mr. Zewdu was arrested.

      >Findings Regarding the Offences

      >[7] Mr. Zewdu’s offences demonstrate a willingness to target women, and it appears that he offends when few people are around. The timing of the offences suggests that custodial sentences, being on court conditions with mental health support and parental support fails in rehabilitating or slowing Mr. Zewdu’s offending.

      >[17] On August 23, 2023, Mr. Zewdu committed assault when he spat in a woman’s face on the Granville Mall. As for the sexual assault, on September 16, 2023, Mr. Zewdu was at a local mall when he approached the victim, grabbed her by the hips and pressed his groin against her while saying something along the lines of “hey baby”. The victim pushed Mr. Zewdu away and he was arrested a short time later. For these offences Mr. Zewdu received a 60-day conditional sentence order and probation for 18 months.

    8. This undue hardship is like a checkbox at every sentencing now. We might as well get rid of the victim fine surcharge because every offender claims this and has no responsibility

    9. EnragedBasil on

Im not condoning it- but this is exactly how you get vigilantes to seek justice for themselves.

    10. princedubacon on

what is wrong with that judge? He clearly targets women. He will certainly escalate his actions upon his release.

    11. alphawolf29 on

wtf this guy is going to murder someone. I can see the headlines “Man with dozens of prior violent offenses commits murder.” It’s cases like this that will see vigilantism rise

    12. Pixeldensity on

      > “There is one conviction for sexual assault, two convictions for committing an indecent act, and two mischief convictions.”
      Article content

      > Convictions include being found naked and masturbating while sitting at a library computer; spitting in a woman’s face; and dropping a cigarette down a woman’s top while whispering about her licking his feet. Zewdu was out of jail on a conditional sentence order when he committed the most recent sexual assault.

I wonder what the article will say the next time he does this or something worse?

    13. TactitcalPterodactyl on

Absolutely disgusting, I can’t imagine being on the receiving end of an attack like that. I would legitimately be traumatized from this.

    14. ochocinco_tacos on

Jesus Christ. It’s clear he cannot function in society. He should be institutionalized for everyone’s safety.

    15. fortuneandfameinc on

Victim fine surcharge is like a ‘tax’ on fines. Like if you get a fine for $2000, the VFS will be $500. Essentially, if you are unemployed, that part of the fine gets consistently waived.

    16. SasquatchInCrocs on

What in the name of holy fuck is up with this justice system? This is not justice!

    17. Defiant_West6287 on

He should be named a dangerous offender and never get out. Does the court system want vigilante justice to handle this since they won’t? Because that is where their lack of action is pushing this.

    18. It’s mind boggling how small the sentences for many of these things are. You would think that as a society we would be strongly against things like slapping random women’s butts, shoving feces into someone’s mouth, or masturbating naked in a library which I’m sure most people are on a personal level but somehow what the legal system says is that these are just minor offences where you get a year or so in jail.

    19. matnerlander on

So hypothetically, as the child’s parent, one could shove their own feces into this mans mount and get away with it? Because hypothetically thats what I’d be doing

    20. This person is a danger to society reading this and seeing the multiple assaults they have been involved with.

    21. EarthSignificant4354 on

I don’t understand why sentences are so tough for hate speech crimes, but not for actually smearing a bio waste into a child’s mouth.

    22. IcyMaybe7594 on

Now unemployment is becoming a defense, we’ve come a hell of a long way.

    23. Who else wants to see this judge have feces shoved in his mouth ?

Does anyone think they’d consider no punishment a reasonable punishment?

    24. post_status_423 on

What an awful, traumatic thing to happen to this victim. I don’t care if a fine surcharge would be “undue hardship”….the attacker can get a job to pay for it.

    25. thegameisafoooooot on

Shouldn’t the greater good be a consideration when making these decisions. Also, if the dude needs psychiatric attention, this too ought to be an option for the judge to exercise.

    26. From Castanet…. Damn, our system is so broken.

“Fitsum Wode Zewdu, 33, was sentenced to 695 days in prison for three separate incidents and charges of assault, sexual assault and committing an indecent act. After credit for time served, the sentence amounted to an additional 228 days in custody.”

“Zewdu, who came to Canada from Ethiopia at the age of three, has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, antisocial personality disorder and borderline personality traits. He’s been addicted to crack and methamphetamine for nine years.”

How many people need a lifetime of counselling before the public is protected from a person who has repeatedly shown they’re not fit to live in normal society?

9 years and whatever the system is doing isn’t working. How many times do we repeat the same thing before someone tries something different? Hasn’t worked here. Hasn’t worked in thousands of other examples, but this is the time! Right? The Seattle/Vancouver method DOES NOT WORK! It has never worked. The horse is dead. Please stop beating it. Can we please move on and try something else? Can we change our laws and try what the Portuguese do?

How much damage has been done to this man’s brain because of the 9 years in addiction? Given that reality, expecting anyone who has been through that to act like a normal, healthy, adult is insane. I’m not saying he’s not responsible or shouldn’t have accountability, I’m saying there is nothing in our system to recognize him as what he is. He’s an adult, but neither he or his family is equipped to deal with him. His brain is broken.

    27. hitsandmisses on

It baffles me that there does not seem to be any sense of pursuing a sort of ‘therapeutic segregation’, I understand it’s needlessly cruel to inflict punishment on the mentally ill… but surely there’s a third option other than ‘locking up and throwing away the key’ or simply shrugging

    28. clintjefferies on

Our biggest joke in canada is our disgraceful legal system. No accountability or real consequences for criminals here and it’s know across nations.
