    1. Self-driving vehicles should only be allowed on closed tracks, and not on public roads, until the technology is 100% as safe or better as human drivers. I don’t like being an unwilling participant.

Hold on, back up a second.

The bus was self-driving…but the tram – the thing on rails with predictable obstacles – was not?

I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.

    3. The bus hit brakes, and was hit by a human controlled tram from behind. Jesus, people, read the article.

      Edit: brakes

    4. So the bus got hit by a tram from behind because the bus braked suddenly. Seems like the tram should have had a larger safety space between them.

But yeah that’s not how any human drives in city traffic anyway.

    5. I don’t know about self driving buses… The driver is also the security guard. They notice if someone is running late and wait for them. They can help people in wheelchairs if they need the little entry bridge thing folded out. And they fix doors when they get jammed or stuck.

    6. >The self-driving bus, with passengers onboard in Gothenburg, braked suddenly and was hit from behind by a tram. There were no casualties or personal injuries. A driver was onboard the vehicle to take control if necessary.

Not as bad as I thought, probably by design.

I find it a bit hypocritical that a majority of comments come out in defense of the AI driven bus (that’s about to make busdrivers obsolete and unemployed) meanwhile every situation where AI art is mentioned (which is about to make artists obsolete) people seem to despise it worth than the plague.

Those trams are so unpredictable. It’s impossible to tell where they’re going ti be.

Mixing brand new autonomous tech with legacy manual transit is pretty risky. Trams run on fixed tracks so they’re predictable, but relying on a human operator to react instantly to a suddenly stopping robot bus is a strange setup. Teething issues are totally expected with these pilots, but hopefully the data collected will actually improve safety rather than just funding reports.

Is this enough of a data point for us to just fucking give up on the driverless car idea? Every time I see a Tesla I think, “Germany: dad and two kids incinerated in locked Tesla”

There is no indication that this wouldn’t have taken place had there been a human driving the bus as well.

It could have been avoided if both the bus and tram were self driving controlled by a central AI.

Trains don’t even have self driving and they are on tracks! Lol! Self driving fanbois make me laugh.
