I don’t think it was ever even this complicated. I think he drained his own companies like a private equity does, then handed the bill to the taxpayers

A big part of his failure is his inability to see any interaction or relationship as anything other than a zero sum game. He doesn’t see win/win situations and can’t stomach a compromise. For him to “win”, someone else needs to “lose”.
That simply doesn’t work when running a country (or a company) and it definitely doesn’t work in foreign policy.
