I can think of some cities that really should be added to this list, since they’re big enough and have unique(ish) names: Tallahassee, Sioux Falls, Nashville, Raleigh, Little Rock, St. Paul, Santa Fe, Boise, Anchorage…

      City names from: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/subject_specific_writing/journalism_and_journalistic_writing/ap_style.html

Top cities by population requiring state names:

      10.Fort Worth TX

      11.Jacksonville FL

      12.Austin TX

      13.San Jose CA

      14.Charlotte NC

      15.Columbus OH

      20.Nashville TN

      23.El Paso TX

      27.Louisville KY

      28.Portland OR

      29.Memphis TN

      List from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_population

Some exclusions make sense: Jacksonville, FL & Portland OR.

Some inclusions make less sense, in regards to population: Cincinnati OH (#66), Pittsburgh PA (#68), St. Louis MO (#80), Salt Lake City UT (#111).

EDIT: And it seems very Northeast/Rust Belt centric.

Don’t forget to write Colorado Springs, CO… you know, in case of confusion.

    4. Interesting. Always kind of wondered about this. Didn’t realize it was an actual List. Surprise of a few exceptions, like Tampa, Charlotte, Nashville, Omaha, Austin, Albuquerque, etc

    5. That’s about half as many as I would have expected, if someone had asked me this question at trivia night.

    6. As a proud resident of the metropolis of Dallas, Oregon, I find Dallas, Texas’ inclusion insulting.

    7. Kansas City smack talking Oklahoma City and New York City for being blessed with a state name but not having the cojones to represent two.

    8. I can’t thing of Cleveland without hearing Drew Carry shout / echoing OHIO in my head

You don’t want to get Sacramento, Buffalo, Des Moines, and Orlando confused with the OTHER Sacramento, Buffalo, Des Moines, and Orlando.

    10. Kalamazoo is probably unique, and Glenn Miller made it famous “I’ve Got a Gal in Kalamazoo”

This is legitimately a pet peeve of a lot of people in Charlotte. There are some news outlets, like the Washington Post, that don’t bother with the NC. Often, the biggest factor are the multiple cities nearby that also start with “CH” like Charleston, SC, Charleston, WV, and Charlottesville, VA.

I always cringe when I hear Seattle, WASHINGTON

Where the heck is there another?

    13. Not at all surprised that Paris Texas, Frankfort Kentucky, and Springfield [any of 25 different states] didn’t make the list.

    14. Funny … there are at least 10 states with incorporated cities of Pittsburgh. There’s far more with unincorporated cities of the same name.
