From articles it seems he walked into a dense forest in the dark after visiting a hardware store and turning his phone off. Posts from his family initially were worried about his mental state but then changed to saying he was an experienced hiker and may have just wanted to see some trails. But in the dark during a typhoon? And ignoring any and all contact? I think it’s fairly obvious what has happened but could be wrong.
I read somewhere that there was a family conflict where the mom was relaying on AI as tour guide and he was unhappy about it and things escalated. ( I wonder if politics didn’t play a major role in this).

My mother had been kicking me out since I was 5 years old so im no stranger.
So she gets irrate and says ” fine! Find your own way back home then! If youre so smart and know everything!”
Him “fine. Bye”
And he takes off.
Then hours pass, and thats when shit starts getting real.
She thought he would come back, she has his passport, she has his things she took away, limiting him.
So he HAS to come back to rely on her and depend on her like she wants.
He says fuck you, ill figure this out.
Or he said “fuck you, fuck life, I dont want anyone trying to control me again” and ends it.
Thats whats going on in my head.

Japanese official hasn’t announced his death yet but his parents did in social media.
Everyone deal with stress and grieving differently, but I can’t imagine myself logging into Facebook to announce my child’s death that quick.
I haven’t been following closely, but I felt from the start that his mom was curating the story too actively. Something in his photos made me think that he is a person trying hard to be different– be his own version of himself– against familial pressure to conform. I also knew somehow that the story his mother told about him not going with them to the temple was too simplified to be true. I don’t know that we will ever get the full truth from the parents, but I am convinced that he felt trapped and unable to escape their control, so he took his own life to get free. It’s so unfortunate that young people tend to think in such black and white terms. I wish he had had someone to tell him, “There are other ways out. It CAN get better. Just hold on one more day and wait for another way to manifest itself.”

I’ve heard that Japan has forests designated for people to commit suicide privately. Anyone know if this is true and is is a tradition there?
I was following that story and from the start I had the feeling that it would end in tragedy. You can tell a lot from the person’s appearance and he appeared like a mentally fragile and overly sensitive type to me. What I was disturbed by: that the family seemed to be used to him storming off and needing to be on his own and calm down. Understandable if they were home but this was a foreign country and a 20 years old is only barely an adult. Why did they pester him with messages and did not try to search him physically sooner?
From the pictures I’ve seen, Weston looks like he may be a member of the LGBTQ community. His family appears to be of conservative culture, and his mother definitely on the controlling side. The suicide rate among LGBTQ youth is very high (40-46% have considered suicide attempt, 10-14% made the attempt), especially these from conservative families. My condolences to his family, I wish things could have turn out differently.

Doesn’t say what he bought at the hardware store. If it was a rope and he’s walking into a Japanese forest alone at night… You don’t just decide to end it like that on a lark. It’s likely this was very premeditated.
We will probably never know the cause unless the family themselves makes it public. Considering his visit to the hardware store and the mother’s comments on Facebook we can derive an assumption, but in Japan when no crime has been committed or public alert is required, the family’s request for privacy is respected. Tabloids like Bunshun are probably the only place where they will go ahead and boldly publish via assumptions and reads like a Reddit post
I’ve seen mentions of a bear attack based on reports from people living/staying in the area. No way to confirm it but it’s possible.
They knew he had mental issues and had a history of running off, too bad they didn’t stay with him to make sure things were ok? I feel bad for the brother too
It was obvious what had occurred the moment the post was published.
If he committed suicide, he didn’t “commit suicide because of an argument about AI” and he didn’t “commit suicide because of AI.” He committee suicide because he had some serious mental health issues and this happened to be the trigger this time. It would have been something else sooner or later.
(And I say this is as someone who despises the use of AI to plan itiniaries on holiday. Don’t people get it? AI is not a fucking oracle, it’s a thing that’s scraping the web in terms of “what sites and routes are being talked about the most in the context of Japanese holiday-planning” So it is literally going to send you to the same overtouristed places everyone else is going to, which is why they are going to be overbooked/packed with crowds and full of grumpy locals fed up with overtourism, and everything will have already been photographed on Instagram 20 billion times with the same fucking identical photos. So yeah, stupid. Buy a travel guide book like Lonely Planet or Rough Guide as a starting point and actually do a little reading and learn a bit about the country you are going to as a starting point, people. But he didn’t die “because” of this.)
