    1. Wholesalers should not have paid such ridiculously high prices in the first place. Now they are stuck holding gradually depreciating bags of rice. No sympathy for bad business decisions.

    2. Glad to see the government handling this so well and not causing more problems later down the…ah wait. .nvm

If you can find foreign rice it’s way cheaper. In my area it’s 3700-4500円+ for 5kg. But! Mr. Max (kinda like Japanese Walmart) has been selling rice from overseas for like 2000円 for 4kg. Pretty much a no-brainer buy.

Other than a Japanese person (cough, cough my wife) complaining it’s not Japanese. At this point buying domestic is silly if you can find foreign for nearly half the price.

They just think their “investment” will be paid off guaranteed?
      What a dumb ahh.

yeah who in the right mind would pay 1万for a bag of rice… thats absurd.
1 day of work for the average japanese. Or more if you count taxes and social insurance.

    6. I can buy a 5kg bag of (cheap) rice for like $8.5 aud(960 ¥)

How can you jusitfy $9/kg as a distributor.

      自業自得!

All the government needs to do is to issue another vague mega earthshaking probably possible again sometime in the future, and see if the masses swallow it again.

    8. Incoming NHK propaganda piece about how rice is the soul of Japan and if you don’t eat rice everyday you’re some sort of scum bag. Starring Haruka Ayase.

    9. Reminder that if you live near rice fields, you can talk to your local farmer and get rice directly for much, much cheaper.

I get 10kg of Yumepirika/Nanatsuboshi for 4,000JPY from my farmer. I buy a year’s supply when the shinmai is harvested (and help with the harvest and planting, but this step is optional).

On the positive side, the price increase made me discover Hokkaido potatoes. They are YUM! I bought 10kg for 3000円 the other day

      コメの消費を3割減らしたが何故か体重は減らない。コメ価格と体重は思い通りにならないものだ。

Do Japanese farmers really need a bunch of white-collar workers and bankers from JA to increase their farming income?

    13. Back in the 1973 oil shock with the toilet paper panic, the 2020 pandemic with mask shortages, and even the 2025 rice shortage, the problem wasn’t really that there wasn’t enough supply overall. A bigger driver was wholesalers holding back stock expecting prices to go up, and consumers panic-buying.

And with the current naphtha shortage, there’s a very high chance Japanese distributors are doing the same thing. There’s actually some evidence for that. After the government stepped in with administrative guidance, the flow of naphtha-related products clearly started picking up. For example, it’s been reported that products from TOTO Ltd. are starting to return to normal in terms of orders and delivery times.
