
A transgender politician in Osaka sues a man in his 50s for damages, claiming she was repeatedly subjected to discriminatory slander on social media. She says, “We need to ensure that society as a whole understands that hate and slander are unacceptable.” The man is seeking dismissal of the claim.

TIL Osaka even has a trans politician. Glad to see some representation as a trans person myself! It’s unfortunate the harassment she has faced though. I would love to show her my support if I could. It’s very hard when you chose a career that puts you in the spotlight like that
I think even though it deserves respect. People should also have the right to an opinion. Unless you are physically hurting someone.. you can think and have whatever opinion you have…
By the way.. when I say it it is to avoid stating if they are a male or female, since I don’t know what they like to be called… It’s yo respect them not disrespect.

Defamation laws in Japan are kinda weird, even true statements can get you punished.
I can’t speak to Japanese law but I do know that Japan is more conservative over LGBT issues as a whole. I think those kind of people should be respected but living in the USA where transgender issues are a hot topic, I don’t know how successful this campaign will go
