Koreans handed the liberal party three consecutive election wins (2024, 2025, and 2026) because Yoon and the conservative party was shit. It’s been three elections, three years, Yoon is in detention or jail, and the pro-Yoon conservatives are wrecked, so the country is starting to move on.

With the recent election having punished conservatives who supported Yoon, rewarding conservatives who did not, and putting DPK in control of the presidency, legislature, and local offices, the liberal party is going to be judged on its own merits and achievements. They can no longer rest on being against conservatives (whatever that means right now) and being anti-Yoon.

The next Korean election in 2028 will not be about Yoon, marital law, or the stupid shit the conservatives have done. It will be what DPK and LJM did for the economy, livelihood of Koreans, and country’s security. They can’t blame conservatives or Yoon anymore.

From what I understand, 정청래 was elected as leader from the nominal members of the party, and that the support from the current 의원s in the legislature was actually low. I think as time passes the members in the Assembly will probably rally around the ex-prime minister and put him into the leadership position.

On the side of the 국힘.. it’s a mess, but to explain succinctly, there are three parts that are going on: the pro-Han groups have called for Jang’s resignation, while the majority of the sitting 의원s also agree- but Jang seems to be avoiding the question of a leadership election and focusing more on the ballot shortage issue.

One thing I’ve noticed within the PPP leadership is that, they still hold grudges against anyone who had broken their unity during the Yoon crisis. One of the current sitting elders (권영세) in the NA apparently said that if Han wants to rejoin the party, he would have to apologize to the 의원s who had supported Yoon in the past. There’s a lot of trust broken because of the Yoon debacle, but it seems like those who are currently in the legislature want an apology from Han, rather than agree that what Han did was correct. It goes to show where the PPP is at the moment.

I feel like things will be interesting for the intra-party dynamics in the coming week.

liberals are conservatives in that the main support comes from finger-pointing
