A Russian warship has reportedly fired shots at a British yacht in the English Channel.
No one on board the yacht was harmed,*The i Paper* understands. The incident occurred around 11.40am on Tuesday, and is understood to have involved the Russian frigate *Admiral Grigorovich* in the sea between the Isle of White and Normandy.
Military insiders suggested this was not being read as an attack on the UK, but it marks the latest escalation in Russia-UK relations.
It comes after British forces boarded a Russian shadow fleet tanker, the *Smyrtos*, in the Channel on Monday. The MoD said the vessel was being used to transport oil funding the war in Ukraine.
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said: “We are investigating reports of an incident in the Channel.”

The writing is on the wall: Frigates are the future. Between the Russian shadow fleet and Straight of Hormuz drama, it’s clear that the shipping that literally fuels the modern globalized economy can unravel in a hurry without protection. Privateering could be the new game in town for the next few decades, and the ability to control a handful of maritime choke points could make the difference between nations succeeding and failing.

The shots were believed not to have been directed at the yacht, and the Russian ship had made other warning signals prior to firing shots, *The i Paper* understands. This may have included blasting its warning horn five times, which typically warns of a vessel’s presence.
They apparently didn’t intend to fire at the yacht or anything, this is essentially not newsworthy.

Regardless of that this was, or wasn’t intended to be. It’s a reminder that a misunderstanding can have massive implications.

Before commenting I’d suggest to read the article, the ship was thought to have control issues and wanted to avoid collision – they sounded the horn and fired a flare – which is quite sensationally titled here
