A nonprofit called Pioneer Labs is trying to mix-and-match genes from different extremophile microbes (which are capable of growing in extreme salt, high temperatures, etc.) to make an engineered organism that can grow on Mars and eventually terraform it. This article explains why nothing can grow on Mars, but I wish it went into more detail about how exactly the scientists are engineering microbes to overcome those obstacles.

I’ve wondered if/when this would happen. Between tardigrades, extremophiles, or bacteria that produces oxygen if we could start to terraform another planet with microorganisms before trying to fully colonize it.
