Higher math scores on the 8th grade NAEP are associated with lower violent crime rates, when looked at at the state level. This doesn't necessarily mean that raising math scores will reduce crime (but it's possible).

Maybe reducing crime will raise the math scores
What this tells me is Alaskans should drink more moonshine

That sounds like correlation not causation. Are these areas with higher math scores also lower in poverty?
