      I remember watching a show about the Hittites and it mentioned a lost/abandoned capital of the Hittites, does anyone remember the name and suggestion locations?

      I thought the Hatti were a different ethnic group than the Indo-European Hittites? Am I stupid?

      Edit: To answer my own question, yes, it was another example of a region being named after the ethnic group that had inhabited it, even after they were gone. The Hattians lived there prior to the Hittites.

      Has there been any recent research or theories about if the speakers of the Anatolian branch of Indo-European got from the Pontic Steppe (their origin) to Anatolia by going through the Caucasus, or by going east from the Balkans?

      Since everyone is sharing Hittite facts I’ll share one I learned yesterday. They shared part of the ritual of Yom Kippur! They would send off a scapegoat into the wilderness “for Azazel”. The Hittites differed in that they chose the favored goat and decorated it to appease the deity.
      The name means “Strong God” or “Wild God”. Azaz-El.

      Looking at the second map, I wonder if this tradition was spread to Canaan around 1300 BCE with the Hebrews later transforming the goat being an offering to a wilderness god into being a mere scapegoat in order to emphasize their “No other Gods before YHWH” rule and separate their traditions from other Canaanites.
      This tradition is also the origin of the term *scapegoat*.

      I learned today that the Hittites called themselves Neshite. They called their kingdom Hatti (Hattusa) as they conquered the area from the Hattians and that name applied to their entire empire to the point centuries later, remnants continued to be called Hatti (the Hittites of the Bible).

      The currently airing anime Red River is set in Hattusa, and although only 4 episodes have been released so far, I found it a great deal of fun.

      Note that the target demographic is women.

      It’s a suprising setting, definitly one underrepresented in media.
