Lower-priced Australian beef could help stabilize Canadian market

Cheaper food is good, that is very true. I hope we don’t have any ridiculous tariffs or barriers on the import of Australian beef. If Canadian beef is selling at $80/kg, Alberta farmers will be fine even with imports.

But the article needs a correction. Yes, Trump’s very Trump like decision to agree with Texas ranchers making a very Texas rancher request to open the US-Mexican border to known-to-be-infected-with-screwworm cattle *has* caused massive beef price spikes in North America by busting up the whole supply chain system. These people are all core MAGA, and its their job to be invincibly ignorant and self-destructive.

However, some of our problem *also* comes from supply management of chicken and turkey, which hobbles our ability to adapt.

The supply management cartel’s job is to ensure that chicken, turkey, and egg prices remain significantly higher than they would if their farms were run in the same system as other agricultural products, by restricting the ability of more Canadian farmers to farm and sell more poultry.

So normally when something like this happens and a type of food’s supply chain gets wrecked by exactly the people you’d expect, producers of other sources of similar foods would respond by ramping up production, and consumers would respond by buying alternative protein sources.

Unfortunately for us, we have voted to ensure that we just cannot do that with chicken or eggs (the cheapest form of animal protein). Only pork and tofu can step in, and they can only expand so much and so fast.

But as long as we are allowed to lean on imports instead of increased domestic production, at least consumers can be protected.

I just bought a basket of Ontario peaches for 12 fucking dlars from a farmers market. Local isn’t always cheaper.

As if grocery chains in this country aren’t designed to siphon money from average Canadians. More likely what’ll happen is Galen Weston will more money to pad his pockets with.

This really tells you all you need to know about our economic system, and why it’s so vulnerable to any disruption, and why nothing will change until the political system does.

It’s cheaper and easier to bring *beef* – pretty much the most expensive and wasteful food available – from literally the farthest place on the planet from Canada.

We’re begging for collapse at this point.

We’ve had Australian beef in my area for years. It’s about half the price of Canadian beef but I never buy it, it tastes weird.

I’ve been eating prepackaged new Zealand lean ground beef for about a year now. $10 for 2 lbs. It’s so hard to beat. We’re in a time where we want to support local support Canadian but at the end of the day. We need to eat, survive and hope to thrive. I try to save where I can when I can.

i’ve got no problem with australian beef, but i’m confused: do we not have enough canadian beef to feed the canadian market?
