I’d love to see Lewis and Carney embody a Broadbent and Turner kind of relationship. Mutually respectful, and focussed on policy. Bring back honourable debates about our future.
Good to see the solidarity, even if it is a no-brainer.
It’s sad but we are in a place where we need to model sensible collaboration between responsible and reasonable national leaders.
Get a load of the Carleton prof they found who insists Carney now needs to beg the U.S. to reopen negotiations. As if he weren’t the one who just terminated negotiations.
I googled Ian Lee and of course he’s one of those guys who’s been advocating for total surrender to the U.S. since early last year.
It’s amusing that Poilievre was positioning himself to be critical of any deal reached by saying no deal is better than a bad deal. Now he can’t really criticize Carney for not getting one.
I can’t imagine there’ll be too many people angry with Carney’s decision.
Trump doesn’t give the first shit about mutually advantageous pacts, he only wants what’s good for him, and that kind of person cannot be trusted in good faith.
Carney just announced part of the breakdown of the deal was Trump including language to limit our ability to make trade deals with other countries.
Yeah, no way we can agree with that. The US is actually disgusting for this.
You know in an entirely predictable turn of events, Canada eagerly joins negotiations in good faith assuming there’s a level of rationality on the other side of the table.
We get close to a deal and at the last second, Trump and his flying monkeys throw their shit and make a demand that no self respecting sovereign nation could possibly agree to and it all blows up.
This is the right response and Avi Lewis has my respect for it.
What we see right now is virtually all Premiers and parties supporting this decision regardless of political support. Of course, rather unsurprisingly, there’s a very vocal group of influencers mocking the decision as a failure but that doesn’t shock me anymore.
So credit to Mr. Lewis – have always found him to be respectful and genuine.
Yeah after Carney conceded to the bridge deal and took some bad flak you cant expect him to roll over yet again and come out on the losing side of a deal. There has to be some give and take and Trump showed him good faith doesn’t earn you anything on the next deal. Carney needs to look at what Canada can produce and get it going. Just feels like we are in a state of slow decline getting weaker. Open the floodgates to resources and build this country up.
we have a Canadian culture and 2 languages and the sovereign right to trade with who we want. Why is the US trying to tell us what to do? Carney was right to walk away. They say they don’t need anything Canada has so let’s see if that’s true.
Avi to his credit was right about this whole mess well before the deadline.
The deal even before Lutnick’s 11th hour BS was unacceptable.
The correct position even 72 hours ago was that saying no to this deal was the right move
