There is approx 2,000 km between the tippy top of Elsmere Island/
Umingmak Nuna and the furthest Northern Russian islands. The Canadian Northwest Passage is far south of this point. There is no actual threat to Russia from Canada but they are flinging shit to see what sticks. There is the South Korean ship testing the northern route over Russia, which i am sure they are not happy about as commercial ships can hide military activity (which is exactly what Russia has been doing off the UK’s coast). Every accusation a confession.
There’s no cooperation with Russia when they’re waging war against Ukraine and threatening our allies in Europe. We can’t trust Russia and think they’d leave us alone because there’s no military build up in the north. Anything we would sign with the Russians wouldn’t be worth the paper it is printed on.
The Russians are already planted in the arctic. There are spies and advance units everywhere and it is well documented. The only reason Russia would say something like this is because they want an undefended arctic they can easily overtake.
Ahh yes the old “defending yourself is seen as an act of aggression so best to just capitulate” line of thinking. Works for bears, not for bullies.
Like Russia’s gonna launch a second losing offensive.
I cannot wait for Ukraine to finish decimating their gas plants so we can stop hearing about how close Russia is to winning their ~~3 day~~ 4 year military operation and how we’re all next if we don’t stop making fun of them.
This would be a clear indication that we need to move quicker on protecting our sovereignty in the arctic.
Also, I think an investigation should be conducted into Alison LeClaire and whether she has been compromised.

The only thing that has prevented an uptick of Russian intrusion into Canada’s north in the last several years has been Russia’s failure in Ukraine, which has diverted a lot of their resources (particularly military) to Ukraine.
Now is the time for Canada to defend its sovereignty in the north.
It’s kind of a ridiculous argument to say that Russia would regard it as a threat if we responded to their existing military buildup neighbouring us by increasing our own military presence to a modest degree. Sure, it’s the kind of ridiculous and transparently self-serving argument Putin’s government makes all the time, but that doesn’t mean we have to treat it like it’s a reasonable claim. If they don’t want confrontation in the north, then they should feel free and invited to remove their own military presence, or shut their mouths. (Or both.)
World’s largest country wants the world to respect their space while they’re engaged in an asinine war of expansion.
More reason to reinforce the Arctic and defend our territory. They lack the mobilization to hold anything to our north, but that won’t stop them from trying if they think we’re undefended. We can expect zero US support, and if anything they might make it harder on us, so we should unilaterally move on this.
Russia has a GDP in the same ballpark as ours and their military procurement is mired in shit. We can level up our Arctic forces much faster and better than they can with an active war on their home front and all procurement coming from China and North Korea. They are rumoured to be preparing an attack on NATO for some reason. Only an idiot starts two wars simultaneously, saber rattling about yet a third possible military front is so far beyond idiocy that its farcical.
Russia has made significant investments in militarising their north. I don’t see how Canada half assing something similar is a threat to Russia.
