Canada can afford to wait out Trump’s trade war, say two prominent policy vets

The truth is we really needed this. We were/are way too dependent on the US. But it would never be politically viable for any politician to try and do what Carney has been able to do in the last year and a half. And even domestically, what we need to do over the next 10 years.

How about, instead of trying to find another major trading patron (China/Europe) to replace our current trading relationship with the USA, how bout we actually start turning our resources into value added products to replace imports?

How about Canada make simple things domestically, like brown paper bags, glass bottles or iron nails? How about turning Canadian wheat into domestically produced cereal to feed kids going to school?

The Democrats never removed Trump tariffs once Biden won. They were maintained.

Hope is not a strategy.

Does anyone think that Canadian domestic sovereignty, or Quebec culture, means anything to the EU or to China?

It’s crazy that we export aluminium to the US and buy back aluminium cans from them.

Either the Quebec (where most aluminium is produced) or the Federal Government should invest, perhaps by providing interest free loans to at least three different companies (to have competition – and prohibiting them from ever merging) so that the infrastructure could be build here to produce those cans.

There’s a lot more that could be done, of course, but we desperately need to stop beeing a nation that mostly provides raw material and have more manufacturing done locally. And, if it is to provide things we need here (rather than for export), it’s definitely worth subsidising it.
