The entire hostess industry is founded on providing companionship for men who have been ignored, laughed at, or feel lonely. It seems as though she is completely oblivious to this fact and somehow feels that her customers should appreciate the few hours she agrees to let them pay for her company, fake laughter, feigned interest in their well-being, and sexual flirtation. Then, when the timer runs out they should immediately switch to understanding that she doesn’t give a damn about whether they live or die and reognize she wants zero contact with them until she is on the clock again.

This also shouldn’t be taken as “well she’s a hostess so a mercenary attitude is normal”. There are actually a significant number of hostess and sex workers in Japan who look on their jobs as providing emotional therapy as much as flirtatious companionship/sexual services and who care about the well-being of their regular customers in the same way any professional in another service industry would care about regular clients.
