Hi everyone

Does anyone know what type of speed camera this is?

Is it an average speed camera (section control) that measures your speed over a certain distance, or is it simply a distance/spacing/tailgating camera?

Seen in Luzern, on both sides each 2 cameras with a distance of aprox. 1km.

    1. It only measures speed. This one, however, adapts to the current speed limit on that section. In theory it could also measure average speed over a section. It doesn’t check for the distance between vehicles.

    2. It looks mine a speed trap but I’m not willing to find out.

Funny story in a tangent, back in the day Poland didn’t have enough money to put out functioning speed traps all over the country so they put out a fair amount of fake ones and occasionally switched them out with real ones.

    3. No, theyre regular speed cams but they also trigger on restrictions like 100 or 80

I also doubt theyre triggering on tailgating, i have seen alot of cars way too close to me when passing them

Source: drive on this section regularly

Where I live, neither. It would simply be a normal speed camera. If you’re too fast right there, it flashes and you get the receipt. But don’t take this as the final answer, maybe someone from that region knows more about those specific cameras

Afaik none of the two. It’s a simple speeding camera.

There are like three of those on that part of the highway.

The “special” thing about this is, that this part of the highway has variable speed limits (80 – 120) depending on the traffic and those cameras *know* what the current speed limit is (they’re connected to the system that determines the variable limit).

    7. Those gantries are used to check speed. For example, if a car need 30s to cross thoses two ganties spaces with a distance of 1km, the system can check that his speed is 120km/h so okay. It prevents people who slow down before a radar then accelerate.

    8. If that is the one at Basel to Germany border, I never seen it flashing anyone. 60 limit and people going 90 and nothing happens.
