Hello. Today I want to compare the situation of the Azerbaijani language in areas where Azerbaijanis have historically lived as native populations. I will look at categories like official status, school education, universities, and media/publications. Since the Turcomans of Iraq are linguistically and culturally closer to Azerbaijanis, I also included Iraqi Turcomans as an Azerbaijani subgroup.
- Dagestan
🔵 Status: Azerbaijani is one of the state languages of Dagestan.
🟢 Media: Azerbaijani broadcasting exists on Dagestan Radio, and Dərbənd is an Azerbaijani-language newspaper.
🟢 Schools: Azerbaijani-medium schools still operate in Azerbaijani-populated areas.
🟢 Universities: UNEC Derbent Branch offers some programmes in Azerbaijani.
- Georgia
🟡 Status: Azerbaijani is legally recognised as a minority language, but is not an official state language.
🟢 Media: Georgian Public Broadcaster has Azerbaijani programming, and Gurjistan is an Azerbaijani newspaper.
🟢 Schools: Azerbaijani-medium schools operate, especially in Kvemo Kartli.
🔴 Universities: No Azerbaijani-specific degree or Azerbaijani-medium university education.
- Iraqi Kurdistan
🟡 Status: Turcoman has minority-language protections and additional official status in areas where Turcoman are concentrated.
🟢 Media: Turkmeneli TV broadcasts in Turcoman.
🟢 Schools: Turcoman-medium schools operate in the Kurdistan Region.
🟡 Universities: Turcoman-related university study exists, but there is no dedicated Azerbaijani degree or Azerbaijani-medium university.
- Iran
🔴 Status: Azerbaijani is not officially recognised as a minority language. Article 15 only gives regional and tribal languages general rights in media and literature education.
🟢 Media: State broadcaster Sahər TV has a dedicated Azerbaijani-language service.
🟡 Schools: There is no Azerbaijani-medium school system, but Azerbaijani is taught as a subject in some schools and pilot programmes.
🟢 Universities: University of Tabriz has a dedicated BA in Azerbaijani Language and Literature.
- Armenia
🔴 Status: Azerbaijani has no recognised minority-language status today.
🔴 Media: No Azerbaijani state TV/radio or Azerbaijani newspaper currently serves an Azerbaijani minority.
🟡 Schools: Azerbaijani is currently taught as a voluntary regional-language course in three Armenian public schools, mainly for grades 10–12. T
🟢 Universities: Yerevan State University has dedicated Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Azerbaijani Studies.
- Turkey
🔴 Status: Azerbaijani has no official minority-language recognition.
🔴 Media: No state Azerbaijani minority TV/radio service or state Azerbaijani newspaper.
🔴 Schools: No Azerbaijani-medium public school system.
🔴 Universities: No Azerbaijani-specific degree or Azerbaijani-medium university education.

OP and another specific poster (feature-something?) have some genuine hate for Turkey in their hearts. I legitimately don’t get it 🤔 What causes these extreme mentalities? Are these like the minority of the minority in Azerbaijan? Actually baffling people.
Azerbaijani isint spoken in turkey why should we teach it?
Are Azerbaijani and Turkish actually different languages beyond Istanbul and Baku dialects/registers? From what I understand it’s a dialect continuum from Western Turkey (even Balkans) through Eastern Turkey until Baku.
Galiba Ermenistan Azeri diline Türkiye’den daha çok önem veriyor.
My situation is weird, I was born and raised in American to two Azerbaijani immigrants but I only know Russian and some words in Azerbaijani. This is because one of my parents didn’t know the language well enough to teach me. Why? Well they went to a Russian school growing up, left the country not long after collapse of USSR and my grandpa only really spoke Russian at home since he had to learn it for his job and he needed to practice. Aka thanks Stalin 🫠
I’ve tried multiple times to learn but for some reason can’t, I had a tutor once in Azerbaijan but hated her( my last name is masculine form since my folks didn’t want to Russianize it) and she would call me by my wrong name no matter how much I corrected her.
Thats mental its taught in Armenia in schools.
It is so fucking funny that Turks just come and downvote even tho there is nothing about Turkey specially but just the situation of Azerbaijani langauge in native Azerbaijani populate countries. It is kinda pathetic. If you do not like this situation instead of down voting just an objective information post go and create CIMER report for Azerbaiani class demand.
I’m not against Azerbaijani being taught but the reason why it’s not common in Turkey is probably because two languages are already very similar and there have not been a visible demand in this.
Georgia must be the last place where the number of Azerbaijani speakers is still growing. Overall, the language is in heavy decline.
