A Tennessee woman who was falsely charged with bank theft in North Dakota and jailed for six months has sued for $10m in damages, alleging in a federal lawsuit that Fargo police improperly relied on an artificial intelligence (AI) facial recognition system to wrongly accuse her.
Angela Lipps, 50, was arrested at gunpoint by US marshals at her home in Tennessee while babysitting her neighbor’s four children in July 2025. The mother of three and grandmother of five was booked into a county jail and remained there for almost four months without bail while awaiting extradition to North Dakota, where she was held for about two more months.
Remember early on in the ai enshittification a dude was trespassed from a casino because the ai facial recognition flagged him as someone else.
Stupid AI in the hands of stupid people will lead to stupid results.
Ladies and gentleman this is what it was like when the internet was first mainstream. It tooks us 10+ years to truly understand that everything on the internet is not entirely true or to be trusted.
Hopefully we can cut that time span in half with ai.

IMO the PD owes her 10m and the AI company should also be on the hook because their faulty product caused damage by having a false positive. Once a product is used to apply legal consequences to people it cannot have false positives period. It must be 100%
Don’t forget that the cops sent her on a starlight tour when they finally released her. (Releasing her at night without money or a coat during snow in the hopes of her freezing to death)
What kind of backwards “legal system” grants an arrest warrant based on this complete lack of due dilligence and baseless “evidence?” JFC. 🤦🏼♀️

Out of 300 million Americans, there is bound to be someone who looks like you. A similar problem happens with fingerprints. The police need to know how to handle giant databases like this, because false matches will occur.

This is dystopian. I can understand an error leading to suspicion, but how does a person end up imprisoned for 6 months when there is clear evidence that she was nowhere near North Dakota at the time of the theft?
That’s fucking terrifying.
I hope those involved get a minimum of 6 months prison time
