    1. Interestingly I could see Canadian involvement being the thing the could push UK to engage more. May make EU ties more palatable or harder to object to for some. But then what do I know.

Canada’s rapprochement will not change anything, the problems inherent in the integration of the UK persist, the EU does not have the same expectations of the two countries.

If it is only a question of a rapprochement without integration, this is already the case, the UK is already closer to the EU than Canada in any case.

It’s almost certain that this new ‘associate membership’ will be less than what the UK gets. And rightly so; the Canadians will always have a very significant proportion of their trade with the US, whereas in the case of the UK, that’s with the EU.

Same goes for Norway, Switzerland, and Iceland, by the way.

We’re finally getting a multi speed Europe:

      A tier – current EU
B tier – UK, NO, CH, etc
C tier – Canada, perhaps AU, NZ et

Some of these tiers will be evolving, with more in the end.

The Brits are good where they are: outside of the EU and anything EU related such as the Single Market.

Too bad they are still using the TCA and getting Brexit in name only.
